This has made me look to my diary with eager anticipation of my next car journey...loved being drawn into the intimate world of this average-and-not-so-average family's life. Lindsay Duncan doesn't so much read the novel, but rather performs a dramatic monologue - for you - alone - intimately sharing a secret.
Can't say to much about the substance of the story as that would rob you of your own gentle realisation of what she is talking about, but be assured this is a love story with some thought-provoking twists that are not exactly the stuff of action movie (but then why would you be listening to a Graham Swift novel if that's what you expected?)but does raise some questions about ...well about what I can't really tell you because that would spoil things for you. My only quibble is that we are being exposed to the big theme of this piece by a mother, a female narrator who is uncannily well drawn by this male author, but, can't help thinking that some (and only some)of the 'enormity' of the issues raised is characteristically male take on the subject. Can't really elaborate further without a spoiler alert!
Go on, curl up with Lyndsay Duncan - irresistable!

From the very first few minutes I knew this audio book was going to be good. Lindsay Duncan reads with real feeling and takes the listener on an intimate, poignant and powerful journey which holds your attention right to the very end.
I highly recommend this audio book and wish I was listening to it again for the first time.
