Publisher's Summary

York, 1577: Hawise Aske smiles at a stranger in the market and sets in train a story of obsession and sibling jealousy, of love and hate and warped desire. Drowned as a witch, Hawise pays a high price for that smile.
Four and a half centuries later, Grace Trewe is trying to outrun her memories of the Boxing Day tsunami. Her stay in York is meant to be brief, but she discovers that time can twist and turn in ways she never imagined. Drawn inexorably into Hawise’s life, Grace finds that this time she cannot move on.

What the Critics Say

"A truly riveting read for anyone interested in, or believing in, past life....This really is a tumultuous journey back and forth between 1577 and the present day, where the reader is catapulted mercilessly, at breathtaking speed back in time, and then jettisoned back to reality." (The Press, Dewsbury)

Wonderfully evocative story.

It's always exciting to discover a new favourite author. Period details of Tudor York were vivid and confidently rendered and I got caught up in the dual timeline story and was thoroughly entertained until the last page. I particularly enjoyed the narrator's voicing of Hawise and loved the way this character developed during the story. Am definitely now a fan of Ms Hartshorne's work.
