Publisher's summary

From the fertile hills of a tiny village near Jerusalem to the elegant townhouses of Georgetown, Three Daughters is a historical saga that chronicles the lives, loves, and secrets of three generations of Palestinian Christian women.

Born in rural Palestine, just before the dawn of the 20th century, Miriam adores her father and is certain his love will protect her, but she soon finds that tradition overrides love. Uprooted by war, Miriam enters a world where the old constraints slip away with thrilling and disastrous results. Miriam's rebellious daughter, Nadia, is thrilled with the opportunity for a modern life that her elite education provides. But when she falls in love with an outsider, the clan reins her back with a shocking finality. Nijmeh, Nadia's daughter, is an only child and the path her father, the sheik, sets for her is fraught with difficulties, yet it prepares her for her ultimate journey to America, where she finds her future.

Each woman, in her own time and in her own way, experiences a world in transition through war and social change... and each must stretch the bounds of her loyalty, her courage, and her heart.

the Narrator made this book come to life.

Set in the middle east the author made the country, tradditions, characters and story line come to life. I don't want to give the plot away so I'll just say the book kept me interested from the very beginning all the,way till the last sentence.
if your on the fence take a leap over and enjoy the journey you will be glad you did.

Disappointing

I was hoping for an historical novel. Instead I got a soap opera set in Jerusalem in the early 20th century which finishes in America in the 1950's. Disappointing!!!

Could have been Better...

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I loved Karen Peakes as a narrator; emotive, great dialogue and accents. Great performance! As an AUDIO book, it has a lot to recommend it, but as a BOOK, it will likely appeal to women who like a lot of soap opera with their historical fiction.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

You couldn't. You would spend 24 hours listening to it. The first part, in particular, is riveting, the second part still held my interest, but the incredibly graphic sex scenes and coincidences in the third part were a bit too much to swallow...

Any additional comments?

This book started out with SO much promise. I don't regret reading it, particularly the first half or so, but the second half was MUCH less atmospheric and interesting. Karen Peakes elevated this book; a less competent narrator would have made me give up...

Three daughters

This is an excellent book of three very strong women over three generations . I love the book but I will have to say that I didn't like the ending . The author leaves a part of the main hanging . Kind of disappointing but definitely worth the listen or read .

3 Generation Saga of three women - so captivating

Where does Three Daughters rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I thought that the book was very captivating. It introduced me to thinking patterns that are clearly different than mine. The author manages to bring these ladies into your hear in a subtle way and you can identify with them. I would give the book a A+

Who was your favorite character and why?

Nijmeh - see below

Have you listened to any of Karen Peakes’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No

Any additional comments?

Palestine from the 1890s until the mid 1950s.
Three generations of Arab Christian daughters each with their own heartaches and secrets
.
Miriam is strong, traditional, smart, and enticed by the opportunities that wars (yes, multiple) bring to her as a woman in her country. Although her marriage is arranged, she and her husband form a marriage partnership that works for them. However, Miriam falls in love with another man and begins a relationship that could put her in real danger. This part is a bit frustrating, yet enlightening. Miriam realizes that leaving her husband is not an option, and you will see what she ends up doing.

Nadia, Miriam's daughter, is rebellious. Although rebellious and wanting to be a free spirit, she ends up marrying a man from her tribe. See what happens to her free spirit and how her relationship to Miriam changes. Nijmeh is her daughter.

Nijmeh's story was my favorite. She is innocent and naive, but at the same time tough and smart. In preparation for her role as next in line when the Sheikh, her father dies, she learns to live on her own in the desert. Nijmeh falls in love, but her father disapproves and intervenes. This will not sound right to our western minds, but continue reading. Through a controlled circumstance, Nijmeh ends up marrying a doctor whose family is from her tribe, and then moves to America. Once Nijmeh is in America,we begin to see the real Nijmeh emerge.

The story of each of the daughters is different than the story that their families know. I enjoyed how the author allowed us to see what other characters in the book were thinking. Some of the descriptive paragraphs were a little long for me, but overall I really enjoyed this book.

Get ready...

Get ready for a ride of a time in your life. Three Daughters hooked my interest in the most surprising way. I am more inclined to read (or listen) to adventure stories. But the way Karen Peakes read the portion of this book as offered, I realized an invitation was being offered to remember life as the most belittled adventure of all. She offered a most delicious read to a book the was so well written that her appreciation of Saah Baehr's story telling was an honored responsibility. The journey I was taken on I could not pack for. Three Daughters had placed me in three generations of distance and time that rewarded my attention with introductions to amazing women. As I experience my own life I find it full with women of courage, substance, love, forgiveness, understanding and acceptance. To know these women exist in places where my feet may never touch ground is not merely transporting but identifying. There are many things I am thankful for in my lifetime. Reading this book or hearing this book read by this reader, has become one of them.

Started out well, then pornography

If you're looking for pornography then this book is for you. I listened to most of this book, but then the descriptions for the sex got way out of hand. It was an interesting story, but the pornography ruined it for me.
