Publisher's summary

The Bible offers some clues to God's personality - he's alternately been called vindictive and just, bloodthirsty and caring, all-powerful and impotent, capricious and foresighted, and loving and hateful. But no one has ever fully explored why God might be such a figure of contrasts. Nor has anyone ever satisfactorily explained what guides his relationship not just with angels, the devil, and his son, but also with all of creation. Might he be completely misunderstood, a mystery even to himself? Might his behavior and actions toward humankind tell us much more about him than it does about us? Enter the mind of the creator of the universe, travel with him through the heavenly highs and hellish lows of his story, from Genesis to Revelation, to better understand his burdensome journey: being God isn't easy. After hearing his story - at times troubling and tragic but always hilarious in its absurdity and divine in its comedy - you'll never look at a miracle or catastrophe - or at our place in the universe, or God's - the same way again.

Ever Wonder What God Was Thinking?

An excellent look into the Bible as a spectator. Chris Matheson takes you on a journey through the mind of Yahweh in a way only a nonbeliever could. What makes God tick? What was he thinking? What is his fascination with male genitals? These questions and many more are waiting in thin humorous romp through the Bible.

Chris Matheson puts the Chris in Christ

This audio book can be summed up in 14 simple words and 2 commas: oh my, what an enjoyable romp thru the dry bones of scripture, sort of.

No, seriously though, I enjoyed listening to this audio book while I go about the soul deadening duties of my post office job. Now, for you bible thumpers out there, be warned that this book is very irreverent. It is also very funny, and at times quite thought provoking. I didn't sense any contempt or hate toward believers, which is good. I've seen it many times where making light of a faith devolves into being mean spirited mockery, and while this is again very irreverent, I don't think it devolved into that. I enjoyed this and got some laughs out of it.
The narration is good. I always prefer to have the author narrate if possible. Who better to give voice to the tale? Also, I'm now going to found a splitter sect based on worshipping Sword Mouth Jesus!

Weird and Funny

This was well researched and so strange. I really enjoyed this book. It's the oddest book report of the Bible.

Finally a translation of the Bible I can understand!

I always thought the Bible didn’t make sense with all the juxtapositions and contradictions. Most devout Christians just write of the first testament as a Harry Potter novel but cherry pick the rest of what they like. This finally clearly states how insane the Bible really is. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside about my decision to grow up on facts.

Should be on Broadway

This is a hilarious and devastatingly poignant work. I would love to see a version of it on Broadway...maybe a one man show?

Entertaining, made me laugh out loud!

Would you listen to The Story of God again? Why?

Yes, it was very funny how the author interpreted the biblical stories and characters.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Have to say God was my favourite. He was so self absorbed, an interesting comparison to the biblical stories.

Have you listened to any of Chris Matheson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I havent but he nailed this performance. I have listened to other books narrated by the authors and haven't found that it has always worked. The author may know their material, because they wrote it, but not all can perform it with such success.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh!

Fun story

I really enjoyed this book (from creation to end-of-days). The author/reader does a great job with the content. Definitely a 4.95 out of 5 star book. Just wish it was a little longer.

Great Fun!

Well done! Yes, it's a parody and it's funny, but by the end I really kinda felt sorry for our hero.
