Editorial Reviews

The immensely popular Sunday Times’ best-selling author Adele Parks is back with her latest release audiobook, The State We’re In, charmingly narrated by the equally as popular Antonia Beamish. This is a delightful and moving story of two strangers sitting next to each other on a plane who both gain life-changing wisdom from each other as they travel across the Atlantic. This story reminds us of the fateful strangers who pop onto our path, often for the briefest of moments but who ultimately change the course of our lives forever. This story is the perfect holiday listen.

Publisher's Summary

What are the odds that the stranger sitting next to you on a plane is destined to change your life? Especially when they appear to be your opposite in every way. She's a lifelong optimist; he's a resolute cynic. In the time it takes to fly from London to Chicago, each finds something in the other that they didn't even realise they needed. When they get off the plane their true journey begins....

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not really,to be fair this is not my usual genre. I went off on a whim and chose this as it was an audible recommended read. I do not recommend it particularly. I didn't really care for most of the characters, it was very cliched towards the end, and made a lot of the classic mistakes you are always told not to do when story-writing. Also, the style of narration was a bit annoying. Short sentences and that annoying inflection at the end of each sentence, like it was a question! Particularly with Joanna's character.

What will your next listen be?

The book Thief or Jeanette Wintersons "Why be happy when you can be normal"

Would you be willing to try another one of Antonia Beamish’s performances?

Was The State We're In worth the listening time?

Any additional comments?

Chick lit.
