Publisher's summary

Twenty-one year old Tom Jewett has embarked on a new career. His new job as a cub journalist with the Traber Herald sends him and his wife, Sally, to Traber, Colorado, the birthplace of Tom's great grandfather. Almost immediately after settling into their new Victorian fixer-upper, Tom's dreams begin. But, are these dreams of an old room decorated with antiques and dimly lit with kerosene lamps -- simply dreams? Maybe, just maybe, the room does exist. Days of searching lead to absolutely nothing, not a trace of the old room, until one night when a terrible storm hits Traber and the power goes out. It was to become the blackest of nights for young Tom Jewett and the deepest of mysteries for Sally.

Amazing narration, intriguing story

Loved the way this book was narrated by Alan Philip Ormond! The characters were brought to life through him, giving this already interesting story a chance to jump into reality in your head.

Truly Unique, Totally Unexpected

Any additional comments?

I thought 'The Room Beyond The Veil" was a truly surprising tale. I was immediately drawn in by the characters and absolutely had to know what was going to happen to them. When things started to get more interesting (no spoilers here!) I had several guesses that ended up being wrong. I love being surprised and it's a fairly unusual occurrence. This book is a combination of paranormal, historical, romantic and thrilling. It's an odd book that I would suggest to any friends that enjoy thrillers, mysteries or romance stories!

What a story!

This book was written by an author who was new to me and performed by a narrator who was new to me as well. I found the book to be engrossing and full of some unexpected twists. The ending was not what I predicted. I enjoyed being able to visualize so much throughout the story based on the descriptions. My review is not a synopsis of the book, but rather my opinion of it. I was provided with this review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily written this review.

Moving day can be very scary!

It’s moving day for newlyweds, Tom and Sally Jewitt. Tom, a recent college graduate, purchased an old Victorian fixer-upper, sight unseen, with the down payment money his father gave him as a graduation gift. The couple moves from Nebraska to Taber, Colorado for Tom’s new job as a journalist for a local newspaper. Although Tom has never lived here, his ancestors lived in the area near the house; very near.

From the first night staying in the house, Tom has dreams of a secret room and sees a woman in the dream who is from an earlier century. She acknowledges him but calls him by the name Ulysses. Night after night, Tom continues having this dream. He begins looking for a secret room, confident that the room in his dreams, is a real room in his house.

The story travels back and forth in time from the late 1990s to the late 1880s in a paranormal manner. Tom goes back in time, and eventually, Sally also goes back in time. While the story kept me interested throughout, there was some unanswered foreshadowing. One example is when Sally finds a key in the kitchen that is on a string. She wears it around her neck so that she can figure out what it unlocks while she is going through the house, unpacking boxes and getting the house set up. We never find out what lock the key fits. They discover a hidden safe, but the key didn’t go with it – it had a combination lock. There was a padlock on the cellar doors, but the key didn’t fit it either. It was such a great hook to keep me curious, but it left me hanging.

The ending was not as clear-cut as I would have liked it to be. It was vague about what happened to Tom and Sally. Loose ends were not neatly or believably tied up. I enjoy books about old houses, writers, and the paranormal, so this book had it all – but there was not as much focus on the house or the fact that Tom was a writer, even though he has a cool office in a turret of the house, and the paranormal was not developed enough – especially at the end.

Overall, it was an interesting story and had me scavenging for an extra five or ten minutes here and there, so I could keep listening to see what would happen next. The narrator, Alan Philip Ormond, was outstanding. I loved his voice as he brought the story to life. Between Foertmeyer’s storytelling and Ormond’s narration, I was able to envision myself right in the middle of the action.

she's right there dude!

** I received this audiobook in exchange for a honest review**

rating: 3.5*

Ok, the narrator, Alan Philip Ormond, did a great job reading this story. The recording production was good. I had no issues with either of those.
As for the story, I did like it but wanted to like it even more. Your suspension of disbelieve has to be so far out there that you can't even see it anymore. Just go with it. The story is interesting but there was just something about it that wouldn't let me love it as much as I wanted to. I don't want to reveal any of the plot cause you think it's one way and will end happy but it's just so frustrating. so close but never making that connection. you'll see what I mean.
I would read or listen to more by this author.

This Book Went Over My Head...

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

This Book Went A Certain Direction I Could Never Grasp A Hold To...It Just Seemed To Leave Loop Holes That Weren't Fully Explained.. The Narrator Was Good But The Story Was Extremely Strange...I Would Not Recommend This Book...

Maybe not horror, but a surprisingly unique tale

I really enjoyed this listen as it was a unique story and plot that was full of twists and intrigue. Although I didn't find this book to be horrifying, or even scary, for that matter it did have enough out of the ordinary experiences to keep me entertained; yet it's not the stuff that would haunt my dreams. Both the characters and plot are well developed and really pulled me in causing me to listen straight through in one evening. I would attribute that, in part, to the narration done be Alan Philip Ormond. His voice was just eerie enough to make it work without being overly dramatic. The publisher's summary pretty well sets an accurate expectation of what is to come.

I would recommend this listen to anyone that enjoys mild horror/spooky stories. A review copy of this audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in return for this unbiased review. My hope is that this review helps in your decision to obtain this book.

Intriguing...makes you think!

What did you love best about The Room Beyond the Veil?

It was a very intriguing story. I loved the twists and turns of characters, Sally and Tom and their travels back to the past.

What does Alan Philip Ormond bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Excellent narration, his voice was just right for this type of story. It was just on the verge of being creepy with the perfect amount of emotion.

Great Sci-Fi Listen!

The room beyond the veil had me on the edge of my seat. A very good story uniquely written that is captivating and interesting.

Without giving away spoilers, a couple moves into an old house and immediately begins an adventure of discovery and mystery. The story is different than any other I have read. I really enjoyed it! However the were a few little things that seemed out of place with the writing, which I only mention in the event the author ever decided to revise the written book. First was the formal way the couple always addressed one another. There was a lack of pet or shortened names between the long-married couple which seemed strange given how close they were. I also found it very distracting that the author named a real-world commercial business several times. It would have been just as easy to say a character applied at a local store which would have actually added more flavor to the rich ambiance of the novel without dragging the reader out of the story.

Aside of these two points the book was fantastic! I listened to the last two hours non-stop, unable to put it down. Nice history in it also along with the supernatural. I was given a copy of the audiobook in exchange for a fair and completely unbiased review.
