Publisher's Summary

Beyond the sparkling Hawaiian beaches, masked by the deceptive beauty of the rainforest, evil awaits 16-year-old Michael Sundquist and his mother, Katharine, an anthropologist who has come to the islands to study the unusual skeletal remains unearthed on the volcanic flanks of Haleakala, Maui.Yet far below the black depths of the Pacific, a mysterious substance snakes through undiscovered fissures in the ocean floor, as nature itself seems to portend the terror to come. Then, with the sudden, unexplained death of Michael's friend, a disturbing truth dawns: the corporation that is funding Katharine's dig has a far greater investment than she ever imagined - an investment in medical terror. And her son may be part of their hideous plan.

Not good

What disappointed you about The Presence?

I managed to listen to the whole thing, but I found myself wishing it would be over about halfway through.

What was most disappointing about John Saul’s story?

This was not, as implied, a supernatural story and I still have no idea what the titular "presence" was supposed to have been. Rather it was an awful attempt at a medical thriller a la Michael Crichton. Characters weren't developed at all and I found myself just not caring what happened. I have read and listened to a number of John Saul novels and generally like his work. Do yourself a favor and skip this one!

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The male narrator did not do a good job with the female protagonist's dialog: he made her sound whiny and annoying. Likewise with the Hawaiian and Japanese accents.

The Presence

What a fab story this was just a ordinary mother and son going to the tropic climate to witness a dig. This is far more than a dig though, and the whole thing turns into a total nightmare ,i could not put this book down, its got such a twist its not what you think either!!!
