Publisher's summary

If you loved The Letter by Kathryn Hughes and The Hourglass by Tracy Rees you’ll be swept away by this stunning summer story.

Italy, 1958: Rachael is a young widow with a small child. After a lifetime of running for survival, of not knowing who to trust and where to call home, she finds herself in a place of safety. On a sun-drenched Italian island for one carefree summer the troubles of her past fade away, and she falls in love. But will Rachael’s new-found happiness bring her further heartache?

England, 2017: Sophie has a handsome husband, a gorgeous house in the English countryside, and a successful career as an anthropologist. But the one thing she longs for is a baby of her own. As she struggles to conceive, cracks begin to appear in her marriage. So Sophie throws herself into her work and tries to seek comfort in childhood memories of her beloved grandmother Rachael.

One afternoon, Sophie finds a forgotten letter and an exquisite silk bracelet hidden in Rachael’s old writing desk. Intrigued, she begins to unravel the extraordinary story of her grandmother’s past - and a secret that has the power to change everything....

The Photograph is an utterly beautiful and compelling story of love, loss, and a family secret spanning generations.

Very Slow And Lacked Depth

The story of Sophie and her desperation to become pregnant almost compelled me to stop listening many times. I honestly thought she would never quit whining about it. Maybe it’s because I can’t relate but she was the most frustrating character I have encountered in any book.It was only the sheer determination to finish the book that made me keep ploughing through it. I was never so glad to get to the end of a book than this one. Save your credit or money for something worthwhile. I simply can’t recommend this one. An utter disappointment.

Jan Cramer was very good with the delivery of the story and the only reason I finished

Gentle and engaging

Like a tour of Italy. Beautifully crafted love story with mystery and history. The kind of story that takes you away. If you love Rosamunde Pilcher, you'll love this!

Love how the story comes full circle!

This is essentially two story lines in one book. They are related of course, but t all comes together at the end. The narrator did a fantastic job portraying the various characters and she gives each one a distinct personality. I very much enjoyed this book.

Hard to hear

I did struggle to finish, in fact skip-listened to get to the end. The reader has her own style, which I must remember. The sentences slide into each other and the voice has downward lilt that puts me in mind of a petulant teenager or a denigrating teacher. I think that affected my perception of the characters who might otherwise have drawn my empathy and interest.

time jump story

Some books that jump between time lines can get a bit confusing if not done properly. The book was a joy and flowed seamlessly from timelines. I was so engrossed in the book from page one all the way to the end.

I plan on getting more books by Debbie Rix.

Nice story

I enjoyed this story but at times it felt slow. Character development is detailed but moments of possible drama were glided over and in the end it just did not leave me wanting more.
