Publisher's summary

As war engulfs Europe, 1,500 passengers risk everything to find a brighter future.

Cousins Masha and Rachel Morgenstern board the luxury liner the SS Manhattan bound for New York, desperate to escape the concentration camps that claimed the rest of their family. America offers a safe haven, but to reach it they must survive a hazardous Atlantic crossing.

Among their fellow passengers fleeing the war, each with their own conflicts, secrets and surprises, are the composer Igor Stravinsky, making a new start after a decade of tragedy, and Rose Kennedy, determined to keep her four children from harm. Particularly worrying to Rose is her daughter Rosemary, a vivacious but troubled woman whose love for a Californian musician may derail her family’s political ambitions. And then there’s young Thomas, a Nazi with a secret...

But, under the waves, the Manhattan is being stalked by a German U-boat. Will any of those aboard the ocean liner ever achieve their dream of a new life in America?

Best deal of the day!

This fantastic listen was a deal of the day that I found interesting. Although I have many books yet to be heard in my library and was currently finishing up Killer Angels, this was next on my list. Angela Dawe’s performance was great! Easy on the ears and her voice changes were superbly mastered. The story itself , initially set just prior to the US entering into WWII, is of many influential and not so ordinary persons whom all experienced life changes from an era of Great War and sorrow. However historically accurate all of the story is, I don’t know but can say that there is a strong historical truth to the base of this listen. It is a tear jerker but well worth the glossy eyes in a tale of love, fortitude and strength.

Surprisingly full of life's beginnings and ends.

I liked all the various stories, especially the Kennedy's. Great intrigue and emotion in all stories.

Good story, great reader

The story was very well-written. Informative, attention-keeping. The author seems to have some hostility towards religion, and this means that FAITH is squashed along the way. And that gets irritating.

Really loved this book, amazing that a male author could capture the essence of the female characters so well

Needs epilogue

Interesting historical fiction but story was loose and choppy. Somehow the war ends, and it's the future, then later again more in future without tying up loose ends. What happened to Rudy? Too much emphasis on Kennedys when other characters would prove more interesting if expanded. Additionally an epilogue is absolutely necessary.
