Publisher's Summary

What's in a name? A lot, according to Caribbean-born Chastity, who has adopted the more fitting moniker Calamity. Now in her 50s, Calamity is confronting two big life transitions: the death of her beloved father and the beginning of menopause, a physical shift that has rekindled her special gift for finding lost things. Suddenly, she is getting hot flashes that seem to forge objects out of thin air. Only this time, the lost item that has washed up on the shore is not her old toy truck or her hairbrush, but a four-year-old boy.As Calamity takes the child into her care, she discovers that all is not as it seems: the boy's family is most unusual. Then, Calamity must reawaken to the mysteries surrounding her own childhood and the early disappearance of her mother.

Not a bad book

This isn't the greatest book that I've ever read. It starts off a little slow before getting into the story. Generally it's about a woman who is going through a major change in her life and life is showing her that she isn't the center of the universe. Through in a bit of magic mystery, love, and hate and you have most of the story. It isn't too bad, but don't expect anything special.

Magic's not just for the young

This is a pleasant, gentle book that weaves together threads of tales from the present, the historical past, and the character Calamity's past. I enjoyed the echoes of "Secret of Roan Inish" in the story.

I especially enjoyed that the main character was a 53 year old middle aged woman, since I can relate to that very personally!

The narrator was decent, though sometimes I wasn't sure which character was speaking. She does use a West Indian type accent, which I liked.

I enjoyed the book and listened to it all afternoon today.
