Publisher's summary

They called themselves "the lucky ones"

They were seven children either orphaned or abandoned by their parents and chosen by legendary philanthropist and brain surgeon Dr. Vincent Capello to live in The Dragon, his almost magical beach house on the Oregon Coast. Allison was the youngest of the lucky ones living an idyllic life with her newfound family...until the night she almost died and was then whisked away from the house and her adopted family forever.

Now, 13 years later, Allison receives a letter from Roland, Dr. Capello's eldest son, warning her that their father is ill and in his final days. Allison knows she must go home again and confront the ghosts of her past. She's determined to find out what really happened that fateful night - was it an accident, or, as she's always suspected, did one of her beloved family members try to kill her?

But digging into the past can reveal horrific truths, and when Allison pieces together the story of her life, she learns the terrible secret at the heart of the family she once loved but never really knew.

terrible

This book was awful. I was slogging through it, but once it got to sibling incest and monks having sex, I'm out. It was uncomfortable and ridiculous. The whole premise of the book in regards to her finding out her past was just lost on this really awkward sex thing with her brother, the monk. I quit listening halfway through the book. if I could give this less then 1 star, I would.

Spooky and Mysterious

I usually read Reisz because she writes beautiful erotica. But this one is not erotica. It's a mystery suspense with some romance in it. Very well done, which I expect from this author. The plot is intriguing and every character is memorable and realistic. The narrator has a pleasing delivery. She changes her voice just enough so that you know who is talking, but not so much that it's odd or irritating. I sat up until early this morning to listen to the rest of this. It was worth it!

Shirley Jackson would approve

A dark and moody West Coast Gothic novel that is a good fit for Shirley Jackson fans. Secrets, money, and awkward family relationships fill a tainted house in Oregon. Zeller delivers a terrific performance. #AmericanGothic #FamilySecrets #WestCoast #Tagsgiving #Sweepstakes

Perfection in audiobook

I loved The Lucky Ones when I read it and I loved it more when I listened to it.
Emily Woo Zeller has a beautiful voice, perfect for this story. Making everything more interesting, more suspensful, more romantic, more everything. She did great with all the inflections, different personalities, and accents.
I loved repeating this story because, as always, I could get more details I didn't get the first time I read it, and I analyzed every detail regarding Allison's mysterious fall and her return to The Dragon.
I loved reliving her romance with Roland.
I loved falling in love again with Roland and Allison and enjoy their almost-forbidden romance.
I loved reading again about Twins, they are great.
And of course, I loved falling in love once again with the universe Tiffany has created around McQueen where he is always a secondary character.
200% recommended.

Good story

I liked the story overall. I liked that I couldn’t truly figure out what was happening until it unfolded but honestly, the narrator was great and really brought it to life

A tragically chilling story of a strange family

Discovering the truth about a past you were unaware of May either be liberating or damning ... A chilling story about finding who your family really is & trying to uncover a strange turn of events. 5 Thrilling Stars for "The Lucky Ones"... When you find out if being "lucky" is really good or horribly bad.

Highly recommended, I enjoyed it so much!

I absolutely loved this story.
It’s first and foremost a mystery, with some added romance and suspense.
In a lot of mystery novels I tend to be a bit lost at times. Characters/ possible suspects get introduced so fast and without making a big impression that I have trouble remembering who was who sometimes.
Not so in this story. Everyone that’s introduced is believable, felt genuine and left an impression.
I had no trouble keeping people apart, and that made me enjoy the mystery all the more.

I immediately felt a connection with the main character Allison, and I absolutely love it when that happens.
No ‘doing your best to feel invested in a character’ or ‘trying to like a story’.. no, the interest and engagement was there instantly and effortlessly. That doesn’t happen all that often.
And that feeling of engagement stayed the entire story, I loved it from beginning to end.

The story deals with some heavy themes. The children taken in by Dr. Capello have troubling pasts.
But I don’t feel like that made this a sad story. A feeling of love and wholesomeness is what most stuck with me. (the family reminded me of The Umbrella Academy, unrelated people, creating a family together)

The narration was perfect, and I enjoy and appreciate that so much.
Narration is such an important part of an audio book and Emily is amazing.

I highly recommend this audio book and I’m definitely checking out more books by this author and narrator.

I don’t like incest, period

So many creepy things about this book. The story would have had the same impact without the multiple cases of incest. It was not necessary.
