Publisher's summary

The victorious Viking army has returned to Denmark from Frankia, after capturing Paris and extracting an enormous ransom from the Franks in exchange for leaving their kingdom in peace. Now Halfdan, with the aid of Jarl Hastein and his warriors, is ready to bring Toke, the chieftain who murdered Halfdan's brother Harald, to justice.

The Strongbow Saga is an epic tale of one man's unstoppable quest for justice and vengeance that carries him across the 9th century world of the Vikings. In The Long Hunt, book four of the Saga, Halfdan sees his quest for vengeance turn into a long and grueling pursuit, as Toke flees eastward through Danish waters and across the Baltic Sea. But though he is now outnumbered and on the run, Toke proves to be a cunning and ruthless foe, and his pursuers will soon find themselves to be the ones in danger.

Fourth Time is the Charm

Roberts nails it. Best book in the series. He has mastered this narrative and fully developed his characters. It's not enough to create an interesting protagonist. An author must write interesting companions that are multidimensional. Roberts has done this in this episode.

Book 5?

Getting better. Waiting for book 5 . In the meantime reading the beast of Dublin. Audible rules but story line is good in book form.

I expect resolutions in the final book!

This series is best read as one continuous novel, in the tradition of Scandinavian epics. Or like TV shows. So it's hard to review each installment as its own book.

This one was bit more disappointing than the rest, since nothing major was resolved, and new problems arose for Halfdan. But I'm invested in the characters and will read the next book. I fully expect to see some resolutions. If they're not there by the end, I may change my review!

successful just as the previous works in this serie. it's good that the author dove into the backgrounds of the other characters.

Ready for the Last Installment

I started this series as a senior in high school and was excited this new book had finally been completed. Overall the book was enjoyable but nothing major happened. The narrator was good but sometimes his voices were to similar and it was difficult to keep track of who was talking. Can't wait for the next book.

Very poor ending

The book builds up a large suspense and then abruptly ends leaving the reader with a shockingly dissatisfied feeling. It fells like someone gave you a book with a torn ending.

Good story but is really a bridge

Would you listen to The Long Hunt again? Why?

No - This book is just a bridge between book 3 and the last book, 5.

Would you recommend The Long Hunt to your friends? Why or why not?

If you are reading the Strongbow series then yes. I would not recommend it as a stand alone book.

Have you listened to any of Jeff Hays’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes the first 3 books of the series. This is the weakest one of the series. This book should have been cut back and combined with the last book or book 5. But this one solidifies Halfdan as one of the leaders in Hastein's crew and war band. It also hints at Halfdan's hand to hand abilities that might play a factor in the last book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No.

Any additional comments?

This is a good series but this is the weakest book in the series so far. There are 2 other books coming out, book 5 and the Beast of Dublin that are also relevant to this story. Obviously book 5 completes the story but Beast of Dublin is a related book that precedes the series and sounds like it will be worth reading as well.
