Creating realistic art in a fictional world
I wish there was a search button for reviews so I could check the 3000 reviews of this book and see who else read the main character as high functioning on the autism spectrum. It seemed obvious to me as I listened but no reviews I checked mention this.
It frustrated me once I realized a large premise of the book would be people talking about how they never understood what Sophie was thinking. All this while the author put together this interesting collection of voices who each directly mention huge red flags left me feeling cheated of resolution.
I also docked a star because the movies described never came off the page and became real to me. It's hard to write about original creative work in a way that feels authentic and engaging (Wylding Hall pulls it off; Juliet, Naked does not) and it didn't quite work here.
