Editorial Reviews

With backdrops of "knife wound valleys", wild rivers, the Hagia Sofia, and monasteries dating from the middle ages, D. B. Clifton’s mysterious adventure The Last Watcher rides along the elegant, warm voice of British actor Simon Prebble, and takes the listener on a personal, religious, and magical journey in a style situated somewhere between J. R. R. Tolkien and Dan Brown. Our hero is a religiously disillusioned young man forced to take shelter in the Bulgarian mountains with a secret group of monks who are tasked with guarding the crypt of a captured demon. The first in a quadrilogy, The Last Watcher spins a fantastic tale of a man fighting what he is unsure he even believes in.

Publisher's Summary

Upon his beloved mentor’s death, a young seminary student begins a journey to prove that everything in which he once believed is nothing but a fraud. His travels take him to the mountains of Bulgaria, where he’s forced to seek shelter in the cabin of a wild-eyed old hermit who claims to be a member of a secret order of monks, charged with the task of guarding the crypt of a captured demon. He has no interest in the hermit’s account, until an intruder attacks.

Critic Reviews

"Simon Prebble is the perfect choice to narrate this short drama about a monastery in which a mad monk, 'the last watcher,' guards something truly terrifying. Prebble’s crisp British accent is somewhat muted as he gives life to the frightened monk. You can hear the hysterical fear in the old monk’s voice and the desperate confusion in that of the young visitor, who fears what’s behind the door more than the howling monsters outside." Great short story for an audiobook

I recently had a change to finish listening to The Last Watcher. It begins as a time of turmoil for a religious man and turns into a fantasy of a honorable man fighting against an unspeakable evil. The voice acting is solid in this story. It some ways, it reminds me of a good episode of The Twilight Zone. Not the newer ones, but the old black and white shows with the classic Hollywood and TV stars. I recommend this as a story to listen to while on a cross country flight or commute.

I especially liked the ending. The lead character comes to a realization of himself in those final moments and it leaves the reader/listener with a sense of completion. This was a good beginning to The Last Watcher series by D. B. Clifton.

Check out the Time first!!

Any additional comments?

A decent enough story, but don't make the mistake I did. It's only an hour long. Wasn't worth the credit.
