What did you like most about The Heart of Midlothian (Dramatised)?
Set against the Porteous Riots of eighteenth century Edinburgh, Heart of Midlothian is the story of a values-led woman, Jeannie Deans who would not perjure herself to save her condemned sister from the gallows and yet did the 'right thing' by walking and taking a coach to London to petition Queen Caroline to help save her sister from the gallows. It is in my opinion one of the most moving scenes in all western literature.
What about Gerda Stevenson’s performance did you like?
I remember Gerda Stevenson in the 1980s in a BBC production of Bride of Lammermuir. And I once saw her on stage in Jamie the Saxt. To me she became the character. Her diction is excellent.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Any additional comments?
Pity about the poor editing from the BBC - eg a news broadcast in the middle on other Radio 4 guff at the end. It would be good to have the Bride of Lammermoor made available, as well.
