what the hell did I just read
this was one of the weirdest stories I've ever read, and trust me, I've read some crazy things. The only thing that I didn't appreciate about this book was the racial slurs and the casual racism.

The best surreal western
They don’t make writers like this anymore. His writing is non- linear and his points of view are fascinating. I also love his economy with words. Also he grew up poor giving so many of his characters and subjects meaning and legitimacy. Narration is perfect. Don’t miss this one if you find yourself on the fence ( maybe covered in broken glass filled with broken dreams. )

Top shelf stuff from one of the more underrated authors of the 60s-70s. This book is a great place to start diving in to the brilliance of Brautigan.

Perfect Narration as always
Somehow Brautigans books always find the perfect narrator for the feel and attitude for the book! I am so pleased and often chuckle out loud because of how perfectly the reader expresses Richard’s oh so quick and subtle humors. 10/10! :-)

You will either love this or hate this
What a whacky surreal weird book! The whole thing reads like a crazy dream (male fantasy) or, more probably, a bad trip. I'm not sure if it is really bad or really brilliant. It just defies a coherent review. If you're curious, read it. If you are easily offended by crude language and sex scenes or if you are looking for a plot...don't.
A guy in our book club picked this. A couple of us women are threatening revenge by suggesting something like Little Women or Jane Eyre as a next read.
Johnathan McClain read it perfectly.
