Over the past couple of decades, Douglas Clegg has made quite a name for himself in the world of horror and fantasy and his haunting audiobook, The Halloween Man, will show listeners just exactly why. Performed by the veteran William Michael Redman with a chilling grit, this mysterious tale follows the outsider Stony Crawford as he navigates a world of cults, murders, and a game of horror that is larger and far more complex than he could ever imagine. Loved It!-Unique, twisted and really CREEPY!

This book was an instant grab immediately upon completion of Douglas Clegg's "Neverland." I was so impressed, inspired and (most importantly)-SPOOKED by his dark writing, unforgettable characters and powerful, twisted imagination that I was sure to enjoy more of his work. This lead me to "The Hallowe'en Man" a tale told in several layers through excellent narration.

The story is told through the eyes of Stony Crawford, a man in his late 20's who, in spite of kidnapping a child at the beginning of the story, takes us into the past to re-live his teenage years. For many chapters of this thick, twisted plot I was unsure where the horror would be, how it related to the title of "Hallowe'en Man" and whether or not I would enjoy it but I was not disappointed! It is within Stony's memories that the nightmares are revealed; we learn of his first love, the blind woman in the forest, a summer mansion, hidden secrets of the town, ancient legends and eventually, of a creature...The plot also shifted many times to reveal several layers of sub-plot and different characters took turns providing a glimpse into the horror and suspense that make up this book.

This book earns its right as a horror novel not for the typical cliches, violence or cheap thrills as other books of its genre, but Clegg delivers horror in an entirely different way. Clegg's writing offers a very GRAPHIC and often times, disturbing portrayal of evil with powerful imagery and sadistic motives. Clegg's ability to create fear by exploring the depths of evil and combine it with the unknown make him one of my most cherished authors.

As an Audiobook, William does an impeccable job!!! He used different tones, accents and inflections for each character and brought them to life beautifully!

I will admit however, that due to the constant 'jumping' around in the plot from one story to the next, I was confused at times and sometimes had to back-track. Aside from that, I enjoyed this book very much and I thought it was well-written, creepy and entirely unique. Douglas Clegg has impressed me so much with his capacity to scare and vivid imagination. I recommend this book and especially his book, "Neverland" if you are looking for something new and REALLY creepy.

STUPID, GRATUITOUS, DISGUSTING.

So disappointed. My first Douglas Clegg...and LAST. Torture, sexual violence, total gratuitous violence is so overt that it totally obscures any story line. Kept trying to get thru but couldn't. Read 75% of this garbage before I gave up. Have NEVER quit that late in a book. Getting credit back.

Hard to follow, waste of my credit

I didn’t like this book, it was really hard to follow and took effort to finish. Story didn’t make much sense either.

Brutal Slasher Flick in book form

I have passion for all things Halloween. I absolutely love supernatural horror. In this world that is so full of awful things, scary stuff that can be left behind in a book, is my jam.
This book is not in that category.
This book is absolutely brutal. Rape, murder, severe beatings, infanticide, it is all in there.
If you're looking for a Halloween story that is "spooky" and seasonal, this isn't it.
Every year starting in September I start reading and listening to Halloween themed books to get in the Halloween spirit. Every day life is full of brutality, watch the news, read the news, listen to the news.
My horror fascination seeps with escapism. I want to enter a world that is filled with wonder and the supernatural to take a break from real horror that the world is seeped in. This is a slasher book. It is not for me. It being about Halloween and having a supernatural angle, I've tried over several years to finish it. I can't do it. Even in small quantities I had to tap out. If sheer brutality, gore, and blood is your thing, this book is for you.

terrible title

original story, is very hard to listen to Performance is fine but the story dragged on. and some parts it seems like there was paragraphs of just descriptor words and it made me disinterested. some parts are really interesting but then it immediately got boring again when it kept going from time frame to time frame. the back and forth just kept getting me lost. I like the ending the last hour of the book was the best for me. but I had to struggle through 11 hours to get to it.

The Halloween Man was something...

So, this may be a harsh rating for a really great writer like Douglas Clegg, but I’m giving the story an overall 2 1/2 stars. I wasn’t a big fan. There were moments in this book that made me think, “wow, this is really going somewhere,” but then it didn’t go anywhere. It started off as one story, then went into this massive coming of age flashback that I should have liked, because I love CoA stories, but it was boring and long and at times very confusing. Douglas Clegg is an amazing writer, talented with a lot of pros, but this one was a miss for me.

Ok story, difficult to follow audio version.

Story started off interesting but by the last hour or so I’d lost interest. Part of it is the use of “one page” chapters and constant shifts of viewpoints through flashbacks. I was never sure which character was doing what. This is the second Clegg novel I’ve listened to, and I’ll likely try another.

Pretty good

But I think it could do with less soliloquy and more plot. There were times when I wanted to fast forward through the Scottish S&M guy's parts. He sure did like to hear himself talk.
