This would have been a great novel.

Great short story. could have been a great novel. it grabbed me right away. It also made me sad when it ended.

OK Story

I'm not sure why so many people are confused by what was in the box since the son tells his father exactly what was in the box. This story might be thought of as a lesson along the lines of Albert Camus's philosophy and the key to understanding it is to contrast the fathers ravenous hunger at the end with his children's lack of hunger throughout.
