Not worth a credit

I got this because of the reviews. If I didn't spent a credit on it I would not have finished it. After listening to the whole book I would not have spent a credit on it if given the opportunity again. The narrator did fine, just not much to work with.

Wonderful story and performance

This book was a departure from my typical thriller/,mystery novels. At first, I wasn't sure if I could keep up with the characters' French and German names pronounced with respective French and German accents. But, when my ear adjusted to them, it became second nature. I think Imogen Church did a great job of narrating a story that required enormous insight into each character, and she gave each of them his/her own distinct voice and emotional pitch. Her performance added to the enjoyment of the book for me.

The story was engrossing and tightly woven. Meticulous historical features made it all the more genuine and believable. If necessary, my suggestion is: rewind and go back for a second listen to any part missed or not understood. Sometimes I would get distracted and miss a vital conversation or description that would later fall into place. There is so much intrigue and intricacy that the listener must stay focused. This only made it more rewarding to get to the end and say, "Ahhh, now I see..." and, "Darn, I'm sad to see it end..." I'll be looking for another Kate Furnivall book in the near future.

Waiting for her next audible book to come out!!!

Loved loved loved both The Betrayal and The Survivors - and am looking forward to her next audible release. These two books were the the best of two literary worlds - WW2 Historical Fiction and Mystery/Thriller. Imogen Church also does an incredible job of narrating.

Please keep 'em coming Kate Furnivall and Imogen Church!!!!

Overall great story, got a little lost now and then in the historical details but picked right back up. Great story of love between siblings. All the good and the bad.

Loved this book

Did not want it to end and would love for there to be a continuation of the life of them all going forward after leaving France

Had to increase speed

A good book, but the narration is slow with lengthy pauses. I was about ready to abandon listening but then tried it at 1.25 speed. It made a huge difference for the good.

Incredible story!!

Confusing at first until you can remember which character goes with which name- smart to try and pick it up early, especially the German characters.

Wonderful story, the ending was masterful. Chills down to my toes and silent tears for the last 5 minutes or so.

Imogen Church is part of my top 3 favorite narrators, however I found her to be MUCH too dramatic in this story. Every few words were extremely enunciated and embellished; is even those which were not necessary. It was quite annoying, which was a first for her and I’ve listened to 10+ books with her as narrator.

Overall it was an excellent character driven story but also the first in which I learned a lot about PRE WWII. I was not aware that the decision back then- in some people’s eyes, was the belief that it came down to the choice between Hitler and Germany or Stalin and Russia. If I was living in France in 1938 and was taught that it would end up being one or the other but certainly not freedom, I have no idea how I would feel. Very scary thought!
