Publisher's summary

Ten teens. Three days. One killer.

It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives - an exclusive house party on Henry Island. Best friends Meg and Minnie are looking forward to two days of boys, booze, and fun-filled luxury. But what starts out as fun turns twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine. And things only get worse from there.

With a storm raging outside, the teens are cut off from the outside world. So when a mysterious killer begins picking them off one by one, there's no escape. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on one another, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine?

MUST READ

This is just an amazing book, the killer being revealed reminded me much of the scream movies.

Great listen!

I really enjoyed this book. The story was great and I love having a long list of possible suspects to analyze in stories like these! I think it’s safe to say I wasn’t expecting it to end the way it did. I was pleasantly surprised! I also love the narrator here. All-around, I was very pleased.

TEN

this is my second time reading the book, the only time i’ve heard it read to me and being able to hear the emotions of the characters helped connect a little better and understand the pain or fear or happiness someone felt. sometimes i did feel the emotions conveyed in some areas was a little much, but all in all, it’s a great read.

Relentlessly Exciting Book!

When Meg got an invite to go to an exclusive house party on Henry Island, she didn’t want to go, it’s not her idea of fun, but her best friend, Minnie persuaded her. When they arrive, they find only 8 other people have been invited, which is odd, but what was odder still was the fact that the host of the party was delayed and wasn’t going to arrive till the next morning. So all 10 decide to relax, drink some beers and watch some movies. The only movie they find seems to be a home movie but seeing as it’s all they could find they put it on. What plays out on the screen is a creepy homemade movie that tells them Vengeance is mine. From that moment on things start happening and the 10 people are in a fight for their lives.

Plot-wise, I loved it!! It was fast-paced and filled with twists and suspense. Even when Meg and Minnie are on the way to the island, you can feel the anticipation because the authors descriptive writing brings the atmosphere to life. She captured my attention right from the first page. As things start unfolding, you have no clue as to who is doing the killings and start to suspect each person in turn. As more and more deaths happen, it’s even harder to see who it could be! Personally, I had no clue till the person was revealed!!

Meg is the main protagonist and I loved her! Though I did feel like she wasn’t as strong a character as I would have liked. There were times when she let people walk all over her and sacrificed things she wanted because a certain person told her to (Minnie)… but saying that though, I do think it made her easier to like because I’m like her in that way! She was also curious, aware and not afraid to questions things. She was the only one willing to do what was needed to get to the bottom of things too.

Minnie…. gosh I loathed her!! She is Megs best friend but she was loud, obnoxious and an all-around horrible person. I know she had mental health issues but I honestly don’t know how Meg put up with her selfish behaviour! The rest of the characters all have their own personalities and were well written and developed too. McNeill wrote them in such a way where you will either love them or loathe them!

In all, this was a relentless and exciting thriller that I couldn’t read fast enough. While the whole book is fast-paced, the last third of the book made me not want to take out my headphones because it was non stop. The deaths come quicker and the suspense kept building and building. I can’t wait to check out more from this author!!

Tavia Gilbert read this well. She was clear and easy to follow and had plenty of different tones and voices for the characters. She was also able to bring the tense atmosphere to life and put emotion behind her voice. There were no issues with the quality of the production.

Good & quick mystery.

While listening, I thought I had figured out the “who” before I was even into chapter 10 however I was completely wrong and happy that the book was not as predictable as I had originally thought.

Think "And then there were none" for teens

If you liked and there were none and are looking for similar books, this will scratch that itch. It's very very similar, which isn't a bad thing.

The true shoutout here is to the narrator, she was wonderful.

One of the best and scariest books I have read!

When the book is being read it's really creepy. The person reading the book (Tavia Gilbert) is really good at scary books. This book I feel like without the reading it wouldn't be super scary to me, I mean scary but not super scary. The story is really good and you kinda will never know who the killer is until you actually get to the end. This ending unlike all the other books is not a cliff-hanger. That's what I like about this book, cliff-hangers that don't have any like story after the initial book kinda annoys me. I get too exited if that makes sense, but this book does not do that. When I was getting to the near end of this book around like chapter 25-END I was kinda getting hecka scared like I would be checking behind me randomly and everything like that. I will say this though, listen/read this book if you love horror, this book is the definition of horror when it comes to me. So yea, I recommend this book to everyone reading this review. Read the book but I warn you it's scary.

I only finished this book because I used a credit on it

The story itself is fine until the last few chapters where things start making less sense, not even going to talk about how pig headed the main character is. The narrator has a great voice but there’s too much emotion at times, especially the end. I get that it’s a high stakes situation from the pov of a teenager but it is overdone.

Romantic Cringe

So all the love stuff was super cringy to me. everytime I'd be sucked into the book it would disengage me from pure cringe. Also was a part where a joke was made about T.j was gonna die first because he's black and that's the horror movie stereotype. Clearly a joke yet the main character freaks out. I just think the author doesn't get how teens actually act. It could be because I'm an adult but all the high school problems seemed stupid to me. Over all you suffer through moments to get to the killings. Then suffer some more feeling crap till the end.

B movie version of Agatha Christie

I picked up the book knowing I was most likely going to be reading a lower quality version of Agatha Christie’s best. That’s exactly what I got and I’m not upset about it. The characters are unlikable (made all the more unlikable by the readers overly dramatic breathy voice) so reading them getting killed off was enjoyable. The negative was the predictable order of the murders, zero plot twists there. The happy ending even more so obvious. There was a red herring situation that threw me off the killers scent but that same situation was so frustratingly unrealistic. Yes it’s fiction, but I still want my characters to have realistic actions. Not so with this one.
