Dont waste your money

I love short story collections but this one was bad. The stories themselves range from decently capturing to nails on the chalkboard of your head boring and pointless but sadly most stay to the boring. The narrators voice is ill suited and his "old man" voice he uses for every character gets old, man, real quick.
Theres plenty of other collections on here besides this one, go listen to them.

I'm returning it!

I feel bad for authors when I return a book. I feel bad now. This isn't a BAD book. It's just not up to snuff with what I'm used to. Stephen King, Bentley Little, etc. I like horror that makes you think and sneaks up on you. This... not so much. I've only listened to the first 4 stories, but I am returning this book, because I just can't read anymore. And although the narrator isn't bad, he's not good for this particular book. For me anyway.

I DO think this book would be enjoyable for teenagers and maybe young adults that haven't been exposed to truly seasoned authors (not sure if that's the right metaphor). This book is a bit amateurish for me and I just can't keep listening. I don't think the author is terrible and I do think he has potential. I just think that (for me) he has a ways to go before his writing catches up to the caliber of story that I'm used to. I do NOT mean for that to be discouraging. It was simply a VERY predictable read for me.

If you thought Twilight was well written, you'll probably really enjoy these stories. And I hope you do :-)

awesome shorty stories

I loved these stories. I wanted short stories so I could listen then get in with my duties... that wasn't the case. I lived them so much I would just keep saying one more chapter!!

Utter rubbish

Michael Bray must be angry with Beacon Audiobooks for digging up and prematurely releasing what, at best, seem like first drafts of story ideas. There definitely should have been at least a round of proofreading.
Here are some choice quotes from the stories:
“[M]eaningless bullshit that didn't mean anything.”
“[T]he nagging feeling he was missing something and it was starting to bother something.” (possibly an error in the audio narration)
“[T]hat old saying, about what curiosity did to the four-legged feline.” (How many legs do cats usually have again?)
“Do you think I'm crazy?” “No, I think you have some kind of psychological issue.”

In one story a character asks another character intent on killing her, “Why me?” after informing on him to the police and ruining his life, only to be told “It's nothing personal”.

Another problem is the voice acting. The young male narrator uses two voices, 'hysterical woman' and '(evil) doctor'/'old man'. Both get very tiresome very quickly. The fact that the narrator is American and many of the stories are set in the UK is also jarring, and there is no attempt at doing accents (which is probably for the best).

There are constant references to horror movie cliches (“I expected the horror movie cliches to kick in, the flickering lights, the dramatic pause[...]”), which only serve to underline how derivative the stories themselves are. Most of the stories also overstay their welcome by going on and on with unneeded epilogues and more unneeded exposition. Much of this exposition is repetitive, saying the same things, often using the same words, like a parrot repeating words, over and over again (or using clunky similes, like the ones I'm using right here).

All in all, this collection of stories should serve as an inspiration to aspiring writers. Clearly, anyone can get published these days.

One of the best compilations

I have been listening to quite a few short horror story compilations and this one is one I thoroughly enjoyed. Some of the stories this novels holds really make you think and take stock of your values. Great book.

Meh

Nothing new here, I found the stories a little bit cliches. I would have liked to have seen something new and innovative.

Some Stories are Okay

Some stories are okay, some are bad. I am trying to remember if there were any that I really enjoyed and cannot think of any
