Publisher's summary

An erotic and highly intelligent new novel about women, art, sex, and money from the award-winning author of the New York Times best sellers Final Payments and Men and Angels. Newsweek has called Mary Gordon a "humane, masterly novelist whose great gift is making us care about her people."

Monica Szabo, a middle-aged, moderately successful painter, encounters B, a wealthy commodities broker who collects her work. B volunteers to be her muse, offering her everything that male artists have always had to produce great art: time, space, money, and sex. (He is even willing to pose for her.)Soon after she and B become lovers, Monica starts work on a controversial new series of paintings based on her perception that the deposed Christs of Renaissance art were not dead, but post orgasmic. The show of her new work, championed by the critics and picketed by the Christian Right, makes her a media darling and makes her rich. B, meanwhile, suffers a sudden loss of fortune. Will she take care of him as he took care of her? How does he handle his loss of power? How does she? What happens in the bedroom? Passionate, provocative, and highly engaging, Spending displays Gordon's maverick feminism, her extraordinary wit, and her unique perspectives on art, money, men, sex and the desires of women.

Mary Gordon is such a fine writer, but this one is kind of a dud!

I had no empathy for the main character and her going on about her sex life didn’t ring true. By one’s fifties there are still high moments but it seemed to me no woman at fifty is having that relentlessly exciting sex life, but then again I could be a loser. Who knows? There were some lovely passages, but overall it seemed pretty vapid. I thought the narrator was adequate dealing the meh material.

Great book. Awful narration!

This is one of my all time favorite books. If you are an artist, her descriptions of creating her painyings will delight you. It is the story of an older, creative woman who speaks into existence her desire, and ends up getting everything she dreamed of. And then all the feelings of doubt and unworthiness because of it. And her journey rewriting the story of who she is. Such a joy to read.
BUT the narrator for this title was awful. :( i felt like she was reading a phone book. she ruined it. i had to track down a copy of the book thru interlibrary loan.

Horrible!

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone with no intellect might enjoy this book. The writing was childish, cliche and just bad. I listened to 45 minutes and couldn't take it anymore. Not worth my time.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Total disappointment
