Publisher's Summary

Lady Elizabeth Neville-Ashford wants to travel the world, pursue a career, and marry for love. But in 1914, the stifling restrictions of aristocratic British society and her mother's rigid expectations forbid Lilly from following her heart. When war breaks out, the spirited young woman seizes her chance for independence. Defying her parents, she moves to London and eventually becomes an ambulance driver in the newly formed Women's Army Auxiliary Corps-an exciting and treacherous job that takes her close to the Western Front.
Assigned to a field hospital in France, Lilly is reunited with Robert Fraser, her dear brother Edward's best friend. The handsome Scottish surgeon has always encouraged Lilly's dreams. She doesn't care that Robbie grew up in poverty-she yearns for their friendly affection to become something more. Lilly is the most beautiful-and forbidden-woman Robbie has ever known. Fearful for her life, he's determined to keep her safe, even if it means breaking her heart.
In a world divided by class and filled with uncertainty and death, can their hope for love survive...or will it become another casualty of this tragic war?

It is so rare to find a a well written story with such a great narrator about an historic subject that has become known as "the Great War."

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character was Rob, the Scottish doctor. Alison Larkin brought his accent and personality to life in a way that I will never forget. And it was amazing to me how well Alison Larkin also gave such dramatic and impactfulpersonalities to the heroine, and all the other major characters. The range of her accents and understanding of the backgrounds and motivations of all the people in this fascinating story gave me a sense that I was living in that transformative age.I learned more than I ever imagined about World War I in a way that kept me listening as though it were the latest mystery.Congratulations to the author and narrator for creating such an entertaining and educational experience!

What does Alison Larkin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She brings such a gift of authenticity to every character. Just the right accent for a Scottish doctor or a Lord or a Lady--each with their own unique personality. You forgot this is a work of fiction, and become totally involved in the story--you even forget in a sense it is an audio book for Alison Larkin makes every character so real.

If you could take any character from Somewhere in France out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I would chose Rob, the Scottish doctor. He was a genuine hero who risked his life to help others. And he loved with such passion that he was able to put his own desires in second place. He also seemed to have an excellent perspective about life, and how important each moment can be.

Any additional comments?

Wonderful book

I read this book and loved it; however, the audio version is even better. The characters are well defined and very likable. The author is very good at making the reader feel the characters' emotions. I already own Robson's next book and will be getting the audiobook next.

The narrator is excellent making the voices distinctive and with the proper emphasis. I highly recommend it.
