Publisher's summary

It is 1814, and the defeat of Napoleon seems imminent, if the well-protected city of Toulouse can be conquered. For Richard Sharpe, the battle turns out to be one of the bloodiest of the Peninsula Wars, and he must draw on his last reserves of strength to lead his troops to victory.

But before Sharpe can lay down his sword, he must fight a different sort of battle. Accused of stealing Napoleon's personal treasure, Sharpe escapes from a British military court and embarks on the battle of his life-armed only with the unflinching resolve to protect his honor.

the best jet?

this may be the best of the Sharpe Series so far as it has such a wide range of emotions, plenty of destinations and the usual action and adventure. It ties up a lot of loose ends. However, at times it is a little sad. However that's my point of view and I'm a lightweight.

A believable walk

This book is believable, but somewhat tiring as his character. Cornwall is a great storyteller and seemingly keeps with history taking liberties as he must. This walk towards the end of the series seems is obviously slowing as age does us all. The dividing of relationships, dissolving of friendships, and upstarts of new ones is trained towards life’s precarious journey seemingly making Sharpe docile. In the last few books of this series the epilogues slink away into obscurity as the villains. I always hope for more gratifying details as the books of the beginning of the series. Details of the demise of those characters which Sharpe has pursued become almost empty of the details that brought us to conquest. Still a good read, but more pedestrian in the books crescendo.

Great stories, wonderful narrator

Each story is better than the last. Sharpe is a delightful, complex character. Davidson is a wonderful narrator. Highly recommended to fans of historical fiction.

The saga never gets old…

Read through the Sharpe series many times in 40 years…enjoy them every time. Historically accurate and individually realistic of a common soldier’s life.

Gotta love it

I really enjoy this series and reader. The action is engrossing and the history is not too intrusive.

This book should be called Sharpe loses everything

I understand most of Msr. Cornwell's choices, even so I am left with a bad taste in my mouth after this one. I finish the book hating Sharpe, hating Jane, disappointed with the fortunes of Harper and Frederickson, and unsatisfied with the fates of Ducos. The only bright spot is Calvet.
