Publisher's summary

Shades is part mystery and part ghost story. It's the account of paranormal investigator, Michael Grainger, set against his experiences hunting and interacting with ghosts and his difficulty connecting with the living. The tale takes place at Redthorn Hall in York, England, where Grainger has come to investigate an alleged haunting.

Masquerading as a genealogist to engender cooperation from those who might otherwise be skeptical about the very idea of ghosts or hauntings, he studies the history of the Arden family and explores the elegant manor. As he tries to contact lost souls, he reflects on his relationships, his former ghost-hunting adventures, and his studies of the paranormal. Ultimately, he solves a 150-year-old mystery and uncovers something far beyond your average, garden-variety haunting, and it very well be his downfall - or his much-needed salvation.

Shades

What did you like best about this story?

This audiobook is as much a detective story as it is a ghost story. The characters are very well developed which put me in his shoes experiencing what he experienced. And a couple of nice twists along the way kept it unpredictable to the very good ending.

Piqued my curiosity

I enjoyed this book. The narrator was exceptional and brought the characters to life with different and distinct voices. The plot wasn’t especially fast-paced but did have me intrigued. The flashbacks to previous experiences of the main character were interesting and some especially well-crafted but it did feel like they kept breaking any momentum that was building in the “present day” and when I wasn’t paying very close attention I sometimes missed that we were in a flashback—so I was distracted by my own momentary confusion. Although what was “really happening” became apparent to the reader faster than it did to the protagonist (who maybe should have “known better”) it was an interesting tale. I would recommend it!

Not My Cup of Tea

I just wasn't a fan of this story. I got about three hours in and it was just dragging on. While it was nice getting some backstory to different situations the main character had been through while ghost hunting, the present to past transition was poorly done, in my opinion.

Hoo Hum

Well, I was four hours into the six hour story before ANYTHING begins to happen. Disappointing overall and kind of predictable.
