Publisher's summary

A tranquil Irish vacation, music, scenery, food...and a priest on the run from the mob.

The sequel to the number-one best seller, The Tour.

When a shadowy couple turn up on Conor O'Shea's grand tour of Ireland, the tranquility of Ireland's landscape acts as a shelter against the stormy reality of the life they left behind. On the run from a notorious mob boss, this mysterious couple flees the US in search of sanctuary on the shores of the Emerald Isle, hoping to blend in with the tourists. In their wake lies a mafia family's secrets and a scarred priest torn between his duty to the cloth and to the truth.

Intriguing and uniquely consuming, Father Declan Sullivan's tale of destiny and duty lies at the feet of those he has betrayed. Can distance and deliverance save the innocent in their desperate pursuit for peace, or will evil catch up to them all?

In Safe at the Edge of the World, author Jean Grainger captures the soothing beauty of Ireland in the lives of those fleeing a criminal bent on revenge.

Stop at Book 1 The Tour

Is there anything you would change about this book?

If you listened to or read Book 1, The Tour, it was wonderfully delightful. Characters, history, narrator were vivid and interesting. This one was nothing like that so my advice is to stop at book 1

Disappointed in narration

I was expecting a book like The Tour with delightful characters and Irish accents. Instead the main characters are from Massachusetts with mobster-like accents.

Wasn’t as good as “The Tour”

I was not happy with this story line at all. When I finished ‘The Tour’ I knew that it would start going into another tour with different people, fine. But this was beyond reality. A priest who comes to Ireland with his ‘girlfriend’ because he can’t get her out of his mind. She’s running away from a man who she’s supposed to marry, of which she’s been set up by her mob boss father. So in general, they’re running from a marriage she doesn’t want and also her father because she’s afraid he’ll kill her priest boyfriend. On top of this he’s still a priest from the States, still has a church and now he’s impregnated his girlfriend?!?!

It was so far fetched I couldn’t finish it. The characters were so one dimensional, unlike The Tour, and the narration by Patrick Moy, who’s obviously Irish thinks everyone who lives in the States, sounds like they live “in the streets!” His accents are too put on and it brought them down. It wasn’t just these characters but anyone who isn’t Irish all sound like ‘Yankees!’ Patrick I’m originally from England but I do not & have not sounded like this when I lived in NYC! The narrator can make or break a story, and this was broken. Lastly, before I put it down, the story literally stayed in the same place with the priest & girlfriend constantly say, “what are we going to do?!” I may re-read but right now, I just can’t.

Calling this a sequel is a bit of a stretch....

A few characters from the first story show up, but Connor is used mainly as a frame. In fact, you could remove the elements of most of The Tour and the story would be the same. If you're expecting a true sequel I'd give it a pass.

comment

could have benefited greatly from having more than one reader for the story The male voice detracted at several points especially for the character of Luchia. the voice of Declan was awkward as well.

This is just terrible!!

So disappointed! The Tour was SO SO GOOD! Loved it so much that I bought this book (2nd in the series) ad soon as I finished The Tour. Ughhh, the plot is just horrible, characters unlikeable and the overall narration was also awful! If the narrator can’t do a remotely passable New York accent then hire someone who can! It hurt my ears! Pass on this one and go straight to Book 3 in the series….wish I did!

Silly, Silly, Silly

The story line is so silly and far fetched and ridiculous (The FBI sends someone to Ireland to follow Father Sullivan and DIDN'T know his testimony would be inadmissible??). The New Jersey and Boston accents make the characters sound like idiots from central casting and diminish their likability, making it hard to care where their story line goes.

The Tour was such light and easy fun; This book was not.

If you’re a strong believing Catholic you may not like this book.

I’m not a catholic but I found a lot that was objectionable . The first book “the Tour” was great, light, and an entertaining read. This second book not so.

The story was great, but...

This narrarator has a wonderful selection of m as ke voices from which to draw, but his female repertoire is sorely lacking in believability.
