The irrepressible, audacious defence barrister Horace Rumpole is back with seven marvelous stories by John Mortimer. The much loved stories were adapted from his scripts for the hugely popular TV series of the same name.

Critic Reviews

"Rumpole is at his irresistible best in this collection of seven stories that run the gamut from simple thievery to murder and espionage. (One even includes a discourse on fine wine.) Bill Wallis is perfect as the dry-witted and clever Rumpole, who is surrounded by Mortimer's usual delicious cast of characters, including, of course, Hilda, also known as "she who must be obeyed." The brilliance of this audio is in the voices Wallis uses to portray each individual, displaying a wide range of dialects and accents so seamless and so suited to each that the listener will forget that only one person is doing the narration. Rumpole's asides, internal meanderings, and quotations of poetry and other commentary are conveyed with the humor they deserve in this thoroughly enjoyable collection." ( AudioFile)

Not My Glass of Sherry

I really did enjoy author Mortimer's wry and dry sense of humour, and the stories were enjoyable. However, I guess it's just not my cup of tea.

Bill Wallis's narration is top notch.

Rumpole's Last Case

The Rumpole series is absolutely brilliant and, having listened to some other versions, I would recommend that you always go for the ones read by Bill Wallis who IS Rumpole as per the television series. John Mortimer is one of the wittiest writers (or was, sadly) and Rumpole's antics will have you laughing out loud!

Rumpole, My Rumpole

Was driving from Manchester to Aberdeen and wanted some easy listening, saw Rumpole and thought i liked the TV series so why not, funniest thing I’ve heard for years even sat in the car for a further 20 minutes on arrival at the hotel to finish a story.

Rumpole's Last Case

A very clever and humorous script, superbly narrated by Wallis. Rumpole's subtle sarcasm towards the judge, his wife and some colleagues is often infused with a sad flavor of self deprecation as his career nears its end.
