Serena is a Bermudan jazz singer whose demons lead her to abandon her daughter Artie. Artie's anger eventually drives her to Serena's younger lover, Jamie L'Heureux, a jazz superstar. The spirit of Charles Mingus thrums throughout the story as these two women tangle in a syncopated mother-daughter relationship.
''Remedy for a Broken Angel is an extraordinary novel about digging out from years of suppression to find forgiveness and to forgive. Johnson deftly exposes the many faces of patterns of abuse and how the ''unseen hand'' perpetuates and feeds the demons within. Author, Toni Ann Johnson writes with authority about the world in which the characters in her novel, Remedy for a Broken Angel, live as they endure an endless struggle for the truth. As you read this work, you might just hear the strains of jazz composer Charles Mingus' music seeping throughout Johnson's novel in its refrains and riffs of the complications of relationships.'' Vivid Survival Tale!
Remedy For A Broken Angel is one of the best audiobooks I've listened to so far.
Artie's struggle to survive negotiating the wounds she's paired with the real violations of her self-involved mother makes for a vivid and compelling heroine. Challenged by circumstances that confound and could destroy her, Artie emerges victorious. Artie discovers relationship with her mother transcends even death and makes valuable discoveries about what that might mean for her future and the possibility of peacemaking.
All of the characters as read here by the author are vividly performed with an actor's mastery. Ms. Johnson flows in and out of roles as the narrator and characters jumping from Standard American English to New Yorican, to Bermudian and more characterizations vocally making the reading as vivid and compelling as the writing itself.
