Publisher's summary

Novelist Sheri Reynolds weaves lyrical prose and folksy dialogue into her spellbinding tales. The Rapture of Canaan, a New York Times best-seller, is the moving story of a teenaged girl clashing with her harshly controlled world. Growing up in a closed religious community deep in the rural South, 15-year-old Ninah Huff painstakingly and obediently follows her church’s many rules—she knows that public humiliation follows the smallest transgression. But lately she can’t stop thinking about how handsome James is, even when she should be praying. Ashamed and confused, she hides her feelings. However, when the elders assign James as her prayer partner, she takes her first steps down a path away from the security and blind belief of her upbringing. With warmth and compassion, Sheri Reynolds embeds rich wisdom throughout this compelling novel. Narrator Alyssa Bresnahan skillfully brings out Ninah’s joy, uncertainty, and despair as she searches for a truth that brings freedom.

Rapture of Canaan not very rapturous

I didn’t dislike the book, and I tried to like it. There were too many unresolved things at the end and it didn’t all hang together for me, even though I liked the ending. I adored the main character and her grandmother, everyone else didn’t seem well developed. Not sure I’d recommend it unless it is someone familiar with the Pentecostal denomination.

Gripping Story

I was interested with the cult-like culture of the story. Usually the leader of the group is charismatic, but in this story he is feared. I found it amazing how fear drove most of the characters and the actions they took to please the leader of the "church." It was ironic, though how the leader gave the children a "taste" of life on the outside. The ending left me wanting more. Great story.

Beautifully written and narrated

One of the best books I have listened to on Audible. The narrator did an incredible job being all the different characters. The author made me want to hire her to describe my life.

compelling story

Maybe it is because many years ago my grandmother gave me this book to read. I remember reading and loving it. I would sit at her table and talk about the book with her. She was an avid reader and was always excited to share her thoughts and feelings of a story. She passed a couple years ago and I have semi searched for this book again, but didn't have any luck. So when I saw it on Audible I was definitely adding it to my library. I loved listening to every single word of this book!
The characters are believable and you can close your eyes and see them. The scene described so vividly. I could feel what these characters were feeling. The ending kind of leaves off a bit, but then again, most books do for me. Thats when I know they are good... always leave me wanting to know/hear/read more. Thank you Audible for adding this to my collection ❤

Incredible writer

Any additional comments?

I was pulled into the superstitious world of guilt, shame & redemption of the Church of Fire & Brimstone. Expert reading of a gifted writer.

Title should have cued me

Too much religion, not enough story. So-so narration. I don't have the patience to get thru the hallelujas and praise be's. Sending this one back.
