Publisher's Summary

Here are vintage stories of men and women who dare what others will never attempt, who fight for justice and dreams when the odds are against them. A charismatic boxer with quick hands and a hair-trigger temper itches to fight all comers - but if he's ever going to get a shot at a championship, he will first have to fight the man who ruined his father. A beautiful movie star finds a dead man in her apartment and begs a former lover to clear her name, only to enmesh the tough private eye in a murder with ties to the mob. And in the title story, Off the Mangrove Coast, a young renegade who'd grown to manhood riding freights, prizefighting, and working in mines sails the exotic South China Sea with a trio of dangerous men in search of treasure they figure to divide four ways. But when it's time to die for the prize, can he trust any of them to guard his back?

This Is Adventure

What did you love best about Off the Mangrove Coast?

The wide variety of the stories: Boxing, All-Out Jungle Adventure, Treasure Hunting, Crime, Revenge. L'Amour is the greatest adventure writer of all-time. Utterly readable, heroes you can root for but not unbelievable shining knights; regular joes who rise to the occasion and stand up to corruption and evil.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Off the Mangrove Coast?

Can't just pick one. Here's my tie: L'Amour writes the best fight scenes I've ever read; regardless of whether the fight scenes are in the ring or a back alley, they ring true of a man who's not just thrown a punch but a man who's taken a few as well. Plus, Stephen Lang's reading of The Diamond Of Jeru is far, far superior to the dramatized full cast version (which is still excellent as well).

Have you listened to any of Stephen Lang’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No but he's one of my favorite actors and has been for over thirty years. He can portray heroes, heels, psychopaths, every gamut of characterization. I couldn't help but imagine him as the heroes of the stories as well. He should definitely narrate more novels especially L'Amour's works (Fair Blows The Wind,The Haunted Mesa, hint- hint).

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
