Publisher's summary

It was only supposed to be a game.

In a boring suburb, three lonely men seeking distractions from their monotonous routines get together in an abandoned house to play a macabre game of show-and-tell.

Nothing is off-limits in their little circle - anything, no matter how depraved, is welcome...so long as it's frightening.

But when one member brings what sounds like an audio recording of an actual murder to a meeting, featuring the tortured screams and pleas of an anonymous woman, the jaded club members find themselves truly rattled.

From that moment, the horrific audio - and strange visions of the recorded victim - begin to seep into their daily lives. Agonized cries and sobs are heard in otherwise empty rooms. Shadowed figures lurk in unlit corners. Somehow, the mysterious victim is reaching out to them from beyond death.

Or is she? Digging deeper, they begin to suspect they're being led back to the abandoned house by something else - something that seeks to consume them, body and soul.

And if they aren't careful, it'll get its way.

Incredibly Creepy!!!

This starts with Mike out late one night, he stumbles upon an abandoned house and decides to go in. Right away he can feel that the house seems sinister but that doesn't frighten him, in fact, it gives him the idea of starting the Night Society. He decides to get some of his friends to come to the house and bring the scariest thing they can, be it a letter, a photo etc. Mike invites Jim and Russel. Russel is told that he is to bring the first thing and so sets about finding something scary. He finally settles on something that sounds like a lady being murdered. The three enter the house and Russel plays the tape. It's a truly creepy experience and the trio are too spooked to continue. But from then on, each seems to experience strange things. Something has followed them home!!

I am so glad I found this author!! He knows how to creep someone out without it getting gory or disturbing. He creates such atmospheric books that you will find yourself shivering!! I was listening to this one night when my kids were in bed and hubby was gone and I had to turn it off, it was freaking me out!!! Lol. I kept picturing that girl from The Ring.

The plot was awesome. I loved the idea of the Night Society, not that I'd do something like that though!! I don't even think I could go into the abandoned house!!! I loved how the story was told from each of their perspective because it ramped up the tension!! All three of the characters were well written and developed. I felt so sorry for them!!!

In all, this author has created something memorable. This book freaked me out but also had me wanting to read it again!! It was as compelling as it was chilling. This would make an amazing movie, though I don't think I could watch it!!! It would be too scary.

When you match this author with this narrator, you know you have a winner!! Joe Hempel has become a favourite narrator of mine. His range of tones and voices, and the way he puts emotions behind the characters is amazing. He knows how to tell a story and how to tel it well!! He brings both the characters and the atmosphere to life. He is definitely one of the best!

I was voluntarily provided this audiobook for free from the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

1 Part the Ring and 1 Part Haunted House

Ambrose Ibsen's ghost stories are a unique style and I would almost classify them as their own type of ghost story. I feel like Ibsen has nailed down his version of a haunted house and that house tends to pop up in many of his books. As I said I feel like this is 1 part the ring, a familiar feeling with Ibsen, and 1 part Ibsen's haunted house, not a house I want to visit. The only reason I gave this story a 4 star rating is that while it was a great book, some of the plot is starting to feel familiar. By itself this is a fantastic book; but, when you compare it to other Ibsen books it feels so what the same. Won't stop me from listening to every book he writes though and even listen to this one again.
The development of Russel's character was by far my favorite of any of Ibsen's characters. Jim and Mike were also great but didn't touch me the same way Russel did. Ibsen is definitely becoming a better story teller with each book he writes.
Anyone who has listened to Joe Hempel knows that he is an all star narrator and as I have said many times if his name is attached to the book I want to listen to it regardless the subject, happy he does a lot of horror novels though. He really adds to the creep out factor.

Creeptastic!

This story is fantastically creepy! Rarely does a book spook me and give me the heebie jeebies, this one did! It’s another great story from Ambrose Ibsen, though, I agree with other reviewers in that it’s more of a short story with a lot of filler in the middle. The narration is fabulous. Joe Hempel is one of my favorite narrators and, as always, his performance is stellar. I received a review copy at my request and voluntarily reviewed.

Excellent as usual!

Ambrose Ibsen is a great writer of creepy horror tales, and this one lived up to his usual standard. Joe Hempel was as always a fantastic narrator. He brings an added mood to the story and does not get in its way, which is in my opinion what narration is all about. I loved this listen and highly recommend it!

Spooky Good Fun

It's very hard to go wrong with Ambrose Ibsen and Joe Hempel - they are a favorite horror duo of mine and they do not disappoint in 'Night Society.' A unique take on a classic haunting, this story follows three loners who play a gruesome game of freak-each-other-out in an old, dilapidated house. The result is a spine tingling series of encounters with something unspeakable, something inhuman. The terror won't cease until the thing gets what it seeks...

Creepy and scary

"The Night Society" is an idea for a club that meets to discuss creepy and disturbing things. The problem? Their inaugural meeting wakes something...

Ibsen is a master of prose. When describing the unease and terror, you actually start to feel the goosebumps on the back of your neck. As the terror turns to dread, it's palpable.

Mr. Hempel does what he does best: He makes you feel as if each character is speaking separately. This read is very well done, filled with the weight of the characters emotions and thoughts. Even his reading about a mundane act like buying coffee holds a truth to it that makes the characters truly come alive.

This is the kind of story that would make a great movie.

What exactly lives in the abandoned house?

It's hard to go wrong with any book written by Ambrose Ibsen and narrated by Joe Hempel. This duo has become a favorite of mine. Ambrose continues to write unique horror novels with twists to them that typically haven't been done before, or haven't been done as well by other authors. Joe Hempel's narration just works. He's got a great reading voice and has become one of my favorites.

That being said, Night Society is a good, fun listen and a solid horror novel. The book takes off right from the beginning with the newly formed Night Society listening to a recording of what sounds like an actual murder at an old abandoned house and well, something sinister in the house awakens. They can't get away from whatever it is. Even in their everyday life, it's reaching them. As they learn the story of what is living in the old abandoned house, they try to escape it's clutches. It's a fun ride and I'd definitely recommend a listen!

Macabre and delightfully disturbing!

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Wow, this was a truly creepy and gripping horror story. Joe Hempel, unsurprisingly, delivered a fantastic narration, but the story itself was really dark and delightfully disturbing. If you're a horror fan, like me, you should definitely pick this one up!

Creepy, creepy story

When three bored guys play a macabre game in an abandoned house, things go badly wrong when the voice on a scary recording seems to be haunting them. This story gets creepier and creepier as it goes along, it has some great twists and leaves the hair on the back of your neck standing on end. The narrator really brings out the scary in this story. He makes you feel the loneliness, anger, desperation and growing fear of the characters and really holds you in the horror of this hair raising story.
