Publisher's summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER •

Part love story, part workplace drama, this sharply observed novel is a witty critique of the false judgments we make in a social-media-obsessed world, from the author of The Party Crasher and Love Your Life.

“Sophie Kinsella keeps her finger on the cultural pulse, while leaving me giddy with laughter.”—Jojo Moyes, author of
The Giver of Stars and The Last Letter from Your Lover

Everywhere Katie Brenner looks, someone else is living the life she longs for, particularly her boss, Demeter Farlowe. Demeter is brilliant and creative, lives with her perfect family in a posh townhouse, and wears the coolest clothes. Katie’s life, meanwhile, is a daily struggle—from her dismal rental to her oddball flatmates to the tense office politics she’s trying to negotiate. No wonder Katie takes refuge in not-quite-true Instagram posts, especially as she's desperate to make her dad proud.

Then, just as she’s finding her feet—not to mention a possible new romance—the worst happens. Demeter fires Katie. Shattered but determined to stay positive, Katie retreats to her family’s farm in Somerset to help them set up a vacation business. London has never seemed so far away—until Demeter unexpectedly turns up as a guest. Secrets are spilled and relationships rejiggered, and as the stakes for Katie’s future get higher, she must question her own assumptions about what makes for a truly meaningful life.

Sophie Kinsella is celebrated for her vibrant, relatable characters and her great storytelling gifts. Now she returns with all of the wit, warmth, and wisdom that are the hallmarks of her bestsellers to spin this fresh, modern story about presenting the perfect life when the reality is far from the truth.

Critic reviews

"Katie is a winning heroine.... Kinsella creates characters that are well-rounded, quirky, and a complete joy to read." ( Kirkus Reviews)
"Driven by Katie's witty observations and numerous missteps as she attempts to reconcile various aspects of her identity, this novel is smartly satirical and entertaining." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Another outstanding novel...a perfect combination of fun, laughable moments rounded out with some deep-seated family and relationship issues." ( Booklist)

Ok. Full Disclosure:

What a welcome reprieve from nasty world politics. Loved this chance to escape into a new Sophie novel. Very different from her other novels, but still full of great wit and loveable characters. Switched my schedule up today and did a bunch of cooking and cleaning just so I could play this audiobook. Highly recommend for a lovely escape.

Another winner by Sophie Kinsella!

I have never been disappointed by any of Sophie kinsella books. This book was just as wonderful as all the others and I enjoyed every minute listening to it. I just finished it and I'm wanting to read it again immediately... Just in case I missed something. The narrator did a wonderful job, as well. I always know that I will be entertained while listening to a book or reading a book written by Sophie Kinsella!

Tedious and painful

I am a voracious reader of just about everything. I couldn't get through this one. Maybe if I was just starting my career/finishing college it may have been ok. For me, an adult it was pablum. Don't waste a credit. Not even worth a deal of the day.

Lighthearted, Witty and Effortless

This book is such a fun read. Worth a credit and Fiona Hardingham does a SUPERB job. The book is a page turner, and you can just forget about your every day stuff and follow Katie in her work drama, love drama, housing drama, and the situations she gets in are pretty funny. You will want to read this on the beach, commuting, in the car. Get the book, it's worth it.

so predictable but still had to finish

this book had me right from the start, but the main character just got so obnoxious in the middle (which I realize was part of the point). But, many of the "major" plot twists felt so predictable, yet I still felt the need to finish out the book (maybe it is because I'm driving across country and there wasn't much else to do).
I also thought the book was a bit YA in certain areas

Basically I wouldn't recommend or listen again, but because I did finish it, I kept the overall at 3 stars. so again, it wasn't horrible, but I would definitely pass.

Bridget Jones meets Little House on the Prairie

Any additional comments?

Fun, light, entertaining but somehow familiar. A good listen if you don't want to have to think too much with a few laughs mixed in.

Must Read:)

If you could sum up My Not So Perfect Life in three words, what would they be?

A fun book!

What did you like best about this story?

I like all about her home away from the big city.

Have you listened to any of Fiona Hardingham’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, and this was just as good as her others.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I think the part where they were having a drink. (The club)

Any additional comments?

I find all her books entertaining and the best books to listen to when driving:)

Somewhat disappointed

Any additional comments?

I love Sophie Kinsella, but this book was not a win for me. I did finish it, but at times I didn't feel connected to the book. It was drawn out. I did enjoy the beginning, there were definitely some laugh out loud moments, but not enough to save this book for me.
