Publisher's Summary

Just as Midshipman Alexis Carew thinks she's found a place in the Royal Navy, she's transferred aboard H.M.S. Hermione. Her captain is a Tartar, liberal with the cat, who thinks girls have no place aboard ship. The other midshipmen in the berth are no better and the only advice she's offered is to keep her head down and mouth shut - things Alexis is rarely able to do.

Absolutely brilliant follow up to book 1

I started this, then went back and bought book 1 and listened to both books back to back over the past 2 days. It is rivetting. This volume deals with Alexis' life under a harsh captain, the crew's mutiny,,, and subsequent consequences thereof. I won't give a synopsis, as it will contain too many spoilers. Suffice it to say, it is partially based on a real life incident in the Royal Navy in the 18th Century.
I can see this standing up to Honor Harrington and others, not in the technical details, but in the character's sense of honour and duty. I hope it will run and run. I can't wait for book 3.

The narration was equally good, though I found it somewhat disconcerting to hear American phrasing coming from a clear 'English' voice. The word 'gotten' for instance is just wrong and sounds completely out of character with the rest of the book. None of which is the narrator's fault. Other than that, clear diction, a good range of accents, both English and 'foreign'. I'd never heard of Elizabeth Klett, but will definitely enjoy listening to other books narrated by her.
All in all, a terrific find.

Finally, this audio book was provided by the narrator free of charge in exchange for an unbiased review.

Loved this story!

Any additional comments?

I loved that this story was written based on historical records of a mutiny at sea. In this book Alexis is a much more self confident mature woman who knows herself and isn’t afraid to take on one of the most despicable leaders you can imagine. The character development is very well done. You’ll find that this book will stir up a lot of emotions including frustration, anger, hope and satisfaction. Elizabeth Klett has done an excellent job with the narration. It’s easy to follow the story line because of her outstanding ability to give each character a unique voice. The accents are also very well done. Great story. I highly recommend it.

Fabulous story

Any additional comments?

Having been a fan of historical novels set in Nelson time this series has been extremely well created to follow life as it was at sea in the early 1800's transposed into a space faring society. Do not be put off by the thought of sailing ships in space as it has been very well constructed and abely read by the narrator. I have greatly enjoyed the first two books in the series which I listened to consecutively. I look forward to the next two novels in the series and hope that the author will continue to expand the series in the future. I am now listening to all the Richard Bolitho novels by Alexander Kent for the fourth time and I do Hope that this new space opera series carries on and on and on. Well done keep writing please
an avid fan.

Her Majesty's Navy in Space

If you could sum up Mutineer in three words, what would they be?

Fast-paced, imaginative, light-hearted

Any additional comments?

Imagine the Firefly tv series, exchange the space cowboy backdrop for ye olde space navy..., completely improbably, with masts, cannons firing at close quarters, boarding parties with cutlasses, towns with horse-drawn carriages.. but Firefly was equally improbable yet enjoyable.
