The inhabitants of quiet, tree-lined Mulberry Lane take a keen interest in their neighbourhood. So when number 15 comes onto the market, they naturally hope for a pleasant family which will fit in nicely. Instead they get a half-way house for young offenders - or, as some of the locals call them, "a gang of ex-convicts". Brian, the warden of this house, faces an uphill struggle as he tries to persuade his new neighbours to accept the scheme. He wants to be part of the community - in particular, he wants to get to know Karen, a single mother struggling to bring up her two young children. Yet however friendly Karen may become, there are others who will scupper the scheme at all costs . . .
