Publisher's Summary

Put Cleopatra, Teddy Roosevelt, Thomas Paine, and Father Thomas Aquinas in a room together and what do you get? Steve Allen's Meeting of Minds, of course. In this first volume, Allen plays host to President Roosevelt's brash style (as played by Joseph Earley), Cleopatra's haughty authority (Jayne Meadows), Father Aquinas's intellectual rigor (Peter Bromilow), and the never-met-a-government-he-liked spirit of Thomas Paine (Joe Sirola). Surprising, witty, and representative of the best that television can offer, this volume shows us the brilliance and depth of these historic figures...as well as the creative genius of Allen.

Does not translate well from television

I've wanted to watch this highly-regarded TV show for a number of years, but it has not been released on DVD (to my knowledge). The show is essentially Steve Allen doing standard Tonight Show interviews (a format he invented) with actors playing historical characters. I believe I recognized Jayne Meadows (Allen's wife) as Cleopatra in this recording. Without the picture, it is difficult to enjoy this presentation. All the non-verbal information conveyed by costume, gestures, and facial expressions is missing, and the audio is pretty grainy, too. The studio-audience applause seems to last for several minutes for no apparent reason. Overall, a poor recording that fails to capture the magic of the television broadcasts. Even though I am a fan of Allen, I could not get interested in this recording.

The Art of Intelligent Discourse

This show was "must see TV" in my household back in the day. Now when we're surrounded by tweets, unending, unedited blogs, and YouTube videos, it is so nice to plug into really intelligent discussion and conversation once again. I purchased all the volumes audible has available and I'll end here by holding up my iPod & saying, "Please, sir, I want some more."
