Publisher's Summary

This exotic historical novel tells the fact-based story of the first group of Europeans to encounter the Maya civilization in 1511. Those who survive their initial enslavement react to this fantastic new world in radically different ways. Two eventually rise to become major players on opposing sides of the Spanish conquest of Mexico. One of the survivors is now considered the father of the first Mestizo children, the ethnic group that makes up the majority of the Mexican population. Maya Lord probes the impact of culture clash on adventurers struggling in a tumultuous world unlike anything they could have imagined. Producer/director Roland Emmerich has purchased the screen rights to Maya Lord.

Author's should be authors, not narrators.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The book is being read by the author. Maybe he is a fine author, but his voice is monotone, and he reads so quickly with no attention to punctuation or phrasing. It is so bad that it is very hard to follow the story at times. It may be a good story, but I stopped listening about half way through because the narration is so bad I was having trouble following the dialogue. There are so many other great books on Audible that it was not worth my time to struggle through.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Get a different narrator.

Would you be willing to try another one of John Coe Robbins’s performances?

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Maya Lord?

Not necessarily any, but see my other comments.
