I very much enjoyed listening to this audio book.It is not the sort that I would usually read, but a friend recommended another book by this author which I did read and enjoyed, so thought i'd give this a go on audiobook.
It was great to listen to while doing boring chores. I could emerse myself in doing the lawns or dishes on autopilot while I listened to find out what happened to the characters, who they were interacting with and how seemingly random people ended up interacting with eachother. It really reminded me that people know eachother through communication and love. This book also has a twist that shows how intertwining hearts come back to eachother in the end. It has heart renching moments and loving moments, a must for people who like a rollercoaster of emotion in books. It did have a couple of slower sections but these do have story info so it is good to keep listening.

I'd read a couple of Josephine Cox's books before so knew what to expect - a writer of Northern, working class life and love in the guise of Catherine Cookson, though much less engaging than the aforementioned master storyteller in my opinion. However, I had enjoyed the novels as light reading, and downloaded this for similar entertainment - something I didn't have to focus on too closely.
It has to be said, this novel was slightly disappointing - it is not one of Cox's better stories, and feels a bit too formulaic. But the main problem is that nothing really seems to happen. It starts off with working class girl meets rich man - we seem to be heading in a rags to riches direction until another, more likeable love interest in the form of working class but industrious boy is introduced. Ah, I thought, love triangle territory. But although this was ostensibly what was happening, it never really gets off the ground other than a few wistful glances and a snatched kiss. The relationships are all very chaste and the main character rather too sickly sweet for my taste.
A very hurried denouement seems to happen so quickly you might miss it if you stepped out of the room for a moment, and due to all characters involved in the sequence being either very lazily sketched or unlikeable, you are left not really caring after all.
Having said all this, the novel was easy listening, not very demanding of my concentration which was my main requirement, and engaging enough for me to finish it so it can't have been all bad!
