The New York Times Top 10 Best Seller

The brilliant new novel from the author of the New York Times best seller Everything I Never Told You.

Everyone in Shaker Heights was talking about it that summer: how Isabelle, the last of the Richardson children, had finally gone around the bend and burned the house down. In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is meticulously planned - from the layout of the winding roads to the colours of the houses to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principal is playing by the rules.

Enter Mia Warren - an enigmatic artist and single mother - who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenage daughter, Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than just tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past and a disregard for the rules that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community.

When old family friends attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town - and puts Mia and Elena on opposing sides. Suspicious of Mia and her motives, Elena is determined to uncover the secrets in Mia's past. But her obsession will come at an unexpected and devastating cost....

Critic reviews

"I am loving Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng. Maybe my favourite novel I've read this year." (John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars)

"Witty, wise and tender. It's a marvel." (Paula Hawkins)
"To say I love this book is an understatement. It's a deep psychological mystery about the power of motherhood, the intensity of teenage love, and the danger of perfection. It moved me to tears." (Reese Witherspoon)

Ultra boring story.

I think the story really had nothing in it - while there was so much scope to make really interesting characters, the book felt like such a failure. I think while the performer did a great job, there is little that can be done when the climax itself is so poor.
Don't waste your time.

I liked this book , amidst the covid-19 epidemic I needed something light to read. kept me curious until the very last chapter , waiting for everything to unfold. sad though that life has to be that way, the rich het away with things, well it seems ...

Art lessons

The novel has its nice and boring parts. The ideas about dignity and compassion and how they can have conflicts with other self desires are nicely drown in some parts, but the whole story is not catching the attention of the reader. The end is known and the details were in many chapters are not convencing or is clear in the head of the reader before reading. Overall, I loved the idea and wished the events were more dynamic. Thanks for the writer and the reader.

Riveting

Loved the story and the incredible performance. A movie for your ears - the characters so richly depicted by the reader and the subtle accent and characterization. Bravo!!!

Pointless story - so boring

I had such high expectations for this book, with the raving reviews and the tv show but was left bitterly disappointed. The story feels completely meaningless, and in order to try make it interesting, the author added some long winded background stories throughout that feel disjointed from the narrative.

This book feels like an attempt at the TV show Desperate Housewives, but it's superficial, lacking any meaning or depth.
Not for me.
