Publisher's summary

It's December 1810, and Lady Therese Osbaldestone is looking forward to her usual Christmas with her family at Winslow Abbey, her youngest daughter Celia's home. But then a carriage rolls up and disgorges Celia's three oldest children. Their father has contracted mumps, and their mother has sent the three - Jamie, George, and Lottie - to spend this Christmas with their grandmama in Little Moseley.

Therese has never had to manage small children, not even her own. She assumes the children will keep themselves amused but quickly learns that what amuses three inquisitive, curious, and confident youngsters isn't compatible with village peace. Just when it seems she will have to set her mind to inventing something, she and the children learn that with only 12 days to go before Christmas, the village flock of geese has vanished. The children are as mystified and as curious as Therese - and she seizes on the mystery as the perfect distraction for the three children as well as herself.

Critic reviews

"Helen Lloyd, British actor and narrator, simply enchants with her delivery of this charming story.... Lloyd's portrayal of Lady O. is perfect, capturing her spine of steel and very soft heart. Her portrayals of the children, the young lords, and those working 'below stairs' are also spot-on. This is a true Christmas gift." (AudioFile)

G-rated but fun and entertaining

Don’t go into this expecting the usual bodice-ripping Laurens novel, but with the expectation of a fun diversion. Kind of refreshing that she left her usual bag of overused adjectives at home and just told a good story.

Utterly charming

Date: 1810 December
Chronology: set after The Promise in a Kiss; before Captain Jack’s Woman.
What an incredibly charming story set in the world of the Cynster’s England. I absolutely Love Lady O’s managing of her incredibly precocious Skelton grandchildren through their campaigns to find the missing geese and to match Christian and Eugenia.
Zero sex, some romance, super charming. Well worth the time and money.
Helen Lloyd’s narration works with a mature woman as the primary character. Her voice is pleasant, her pacing is excellent, and she has just enough character differentiation to make it work. Only wish she pronounced Cynster as Sin-ster NOT Sine-ster.

Love Stephanie's books

Great read. Stephanie's writing always holds your interest and keeps you right in the story. This is interesting to finally find out more about Lady Osbaldestone. She has always been a great character in all the Cynster books, now she is on her own. I wan not sure I would enjoy this as much as I did, but I was hooked from the start.

Slow start but worth the wait

Not a typical romance but more of a heartwarming family friendly holiday story with some romance thrown in. Wholesome, funny, and thoroughly entertaining. When I first started it, it felt a bit plodding and slow. The great reviews led me to continue and I’m glad I did. All the setup payed off in the end.

Gracious Grandmother and the Gone Geese

This is a most charming tale of a wealthy grandmother (Lady Osbaldestone) who unexpectedly has to board and entertain three of her grandchildren at Christmastime in the tiny village of Little Moseley. Everyone in the tiny town is looking forward to having their Christmas goose, but low and behold, the geese have flown, nowhere to be found. With time on her hands, Lady Osbaldestone decides that she and her trio of grands will try and solve the mystery of the missing flock. Their investigation leads them into the homes of their neighbors, who have some issues of their own (which Lady Osbaldestone also tackles with delight). These stories are so much fun! Clean, adventurous and absolutely great family fare!

Light, humorous, and worth the read

This book had just a hint of mystery, romance, and strong characters that interwove in a delightful mix. I was pleasantly surprised at how entertaining it was. To see all the characters blossom- from the children to the adults- makes me hurry to find the sequel 😊
