I listen to Spanish audiobooks occasionally to keep up my comprehension, and I find that Audible disappoints in its offering of audiobooks in Spanish. I was pleasantly surprised by how engaging this listen was. This tale of a widower in Uruguay, set in the 1950s, is revealed through a series of journal entries. It offers a glimpse of life in a very different place and time than our own, but I found myself able to relate to the character and his struggles.

In Latin-American literary territories there's a thick cult around this book. That's why I decided to download it eventually. I would sincerely like to say La tregua is so fresh and modern as when it was written, but I couldn't. Nowadays it's charmingly old-fashioned and even a bit dusty. Diary entries of a 50-year-old man from Montevideo about old age, love, loss, God with a superbe couleur locale, very exotic for me. It certainly worths a listen, it's well paced, clever and profound, but I don't find it particularly significant in my life.
The style of the writing is the highest quality and the narrator is astonishingly good.
