Publisher's summary

With eloquence and beauty, the award-winning author of The Book of the Dun Cow, The Book of God, and Paul: A Novel, turns his pen to history's most compelling figure, Jesus of Nazareth. In vibrant language, Walter Wangerin, Jr. sweeps away centuries of tradition and reveals a man of flesh-and-heart immediacy. Passionate, intelligent, and irresistibly real, this is a Jesus pulsing with life, who will captivate you as thoroughly as he did the men and women who walked with him across Galilee's golden countryside. Days of centuries past become today, lit with bright colors of the imagination. Wangerin shows you Jesus through the eyes of the two people who were with him at the very foot of the cross, the two who knew and loved him best: John the apostle, and Jesus' beloved mother, Mary.

"Angels in legions sang when you were born, my beautiful Yeshi! At midnight they poured down from the heavens, every one a whirling star, ten thousand voices in a sky-borne choir. 'Glory,' they sang, and I felt the bedrock tremble. You popped your eyes open. You peered around, seeking the source of the music and waving your hands as if to catch the stars in them!"

Here is a magnum opus of image and emotion: Jesus bringing his father the sacrificial lamb in Jerusalem's temple, Mary desperately searching for her son in the wind-lashed rain, the cry of gratitude from a leper's lips, the loving intimacy of Jesus in prayer, the fury of religious leaders, the agony of an iron crucifixion spike piercing human sinew, Loving son, intimate friend, and brilliant teacher, tender in heart, fierce in anger, wholehearted in joy and in grief, deeply human yet unmistakably divine, this is the Jesus who lives and breathes in this audio.

The VIVID narration matches the MASTERFUL text

The author's reading is appropriately, and powerfully merged with his well-crafted, emotionally-gripping writing. I am moved by the light that is inherent in the source (the Bible) of Wangerin's tale. But his storytelling unveils even further light.
I have been moved to tears, often, in listening to his, "The Book of God." And now "Jesus" is revealing to me Jesus in ways that I will be eternally grateful for (literally)! :-)

Thank you, God, for Your gifts through this author (and actor/narrator)!

...eager to experience all of the author's books...

Fascinating Story of Jesus

The story of Jesus is powerful and the details of the relationships really brought it alive in this telling.

In the presence of the Holy

It’s my second time listening all the way through, or perhaps my third. Well enough researched that one might almost believe Wangerin had seen it all in visions, and/or had spent months, perhaps years in the Holy land, learning the ways of those whose lives are much, much closer to Bible times than our own modern days and western ways could conceive, on our own. I listened again at the start of Advent, hoping to draw closer to my Lord. And so I have.

Great listen

Would you listen to Jesus again? Why?

I've read the print version a couple years back and decided to listen to it this time and really enjoyed it more because you really get the author's meaning when he's reading it to you.

Meet the God-Man Messiah.

My second time through this audiobook, I am treasuring it just as much as I did at the first.

Walter Wangerin Jr. Is my favorite author and my favorite Narrator. The inflections and shades of meaning he had in mind me as he wrote, are flawlessly executed in ways that no narrator could have guessed with any amount of study. The Book of God was the single greatest listening experience of my whole life. And this comes in right behind that one as its natural sequel. Only scoring below it, because of it's length and there not being as much of it. Still, this is not a small book.

If the Bible seems hard to relate to, you might want to pick up this audiobook and see if you might be drawn to the Jesus and His friends in a new way.

I cherished the Bible before I began this series and fell more in love with it as a result of spending time with the Master and His disciples.

If you aren't familiar with the Bible, you should wonder why it is the all-time best selling book in world. You cannot be well read or culturally literate if you ignore the Bible, and here is a gorgeous resource to introduce you to its unfathomable beauty.

Save up two credits for this book and "The Book of God" you shouldn't regret it.

Jesus by Wangerin is Wonderful.

The author is also the reader. Walter Wangerin does a wonderful job with the voices, the descriptions, and emotions of each character. I found myself hearing the story in a refreshing new way.

Just What I Needed

I’m on vacation in an RV at the beach and it’s a little cold. So I really wanted to watch or listen to something relaxing, not too heady or thought-provoking, but also not secular or worldly. I scanned through my voluminous Audible library and stumbled upon Jesus, a Novel, which I had purchased a long time ago. I had forgotten about it. I clicked on it and have not been able to put it down. It is so endearing and entertaining, and exactly what I needed. As far as I can tell, it very accurately follows scripture. And because it’s a novel, I assume that the material that isn’t from scripture is “made up.” But there is an air of credibility and seeming reliability surrounding those details, as if the author did extensive research regarding the customs, traditions and history of the time period and culture. For example, the author’s description of the wedding at Cana makes the story jump alive and you can see and hear the singers and dancers. It’s a beautiful and enjoyable book. Thanks.

Good Jesus Novel

While it is half truth and half fiction, it does help to visualize Jesus life.
