Critic reviews

"McMillan is a gifted storyteller… The cast of characters enriches the narrative, bringing nuance and clarity to scenes and moving the plot along…. Georgia’s story reminds readers who have clocked a lot of living that it’s never too late to reconnect and reflect on the past as they craft the future they want."Fort Worth Star Telegram

"The ripple effects from Terry McMillan’s breakthrough in contemporary African-American fiction still influence our daily lives... [I Almost Forgot About You is] much in the same vein of McMillan’s other novels that track Black women’s journeys through self-discovery."—BLAC Detroit

"McMillan is a master at her craft. Without a doubt, this book will be a hit with anyone who feels stuck in life and is ready to make a move. McMillan has done it again. Get this book and read about Georgia’s journey. This is another book that should be on everyone’s reading list."—The Baton Rouge Advocate

I Almost Forgot About You

I gave this book 2 stars bc it seems to have a good storyline from the synopsis. Honestly, the narration was so bad I could not listen beyond the second chapter. I am an avid fan of Ms. McMillan's writing. On the other hand her voice is worse than finger nails grating on a chalk board. I want my credit back, and then I will purchase the ebook to read. Ms. McMillan no disrespect, you are an amazingly talented writer. Please leave narrating to the experts. You don't do your book justice. Submitted with honesty, love and much respect.

The narration of this book is terrible

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A different narrator, would have made this book much better

Would you ever listen to anything by Terry McMillan again?

Yes, but only if she is not narrating.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Her voice is so flat when reading this book.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from I Almost Forgot About You?

I only got through the first chapter.

Something's Terribly Wrong...

...when a publisher doesn't dissuade the author from narrating her own work when she either just doesn't have the performance/acting/reading ability or just doesn't enjoy her own work enough.

Based on the reviews, I had to check out this audiobook. A narrator, especially an author-narrator, can't be THAT BAD, can they?

Yes. Yes, they can.

My actual quick-notes on the narration during and after listening for as long as I was physically, emotionally, and psychologically able to: "She sounds bored, perturbed, pauses weird, suddenly speaks again, shouting. Reads too slowly. Suddenly shouts chapter headings."

Perhaps the story itself is amazing, but listening to it is painful, shocking, heartbreaking, and that destroys the ability to hear/feel the story itself. For the days Terry McMillan sat in a studio recording this, she just wasn't in the mood and not at all a fan of her own work. Supposed "director" and "producer" of this audio presentation cited at the end of the audiobook: what in the HECK were you thinking??! Did you LISTEN to it? DID you direct Ms. McMillan?? (don't admit to it if you did) Were you contractually obligated to employ the author as narrator and unable or unwilling to secure a performance artist to narrate instead to ensure a quality product that would certainly earn more royalties for all involved? Wrong decision.

no

Cute story, HORRIBLE Narrator

This book held my interest because of the story but it was a hard fight not to quite in the first five minutes due to the very unsuitable narrator.

Excellent

Well she did it again. I loved the book. Her reading, not so much. Her voice wasn't meant for this, but regardless the story was great.

Good Story but ....

The story was pretty good but I did not like the narration - the performance was very flat. I found myself constantly replaying certain parts because I felt like I missed some details or something was confusing. I wonder if I would have felt the same way if I was actually reading the book. The story line was pretty good but I lost interest towards the end.

Would love to listen to someone else reading the book

I can't differentiate the character when Mcmillan reads her own books. She is so dry and the characters don't come through. I think I would have enjoyed it with a different reader.
