Publisher's summary

A riveting novel about how the past never stays in the past, from the critically acclaimed author of The Drowning Girls and The Mourning Hours.

Megan Mazeros and Lauren Mabrey are complete opposites on paper. Megan is a girl from a modest Midwest background, and Lauren is the daughter of a senator from an esteemed New England family. But in 1999, Megan and Lauren become college roommates and, as two young women struggling to find their place on campus, they forge a strong, albeit unlikely, friendship. The two quickly become inseparable, sharing clothes, advice and their most intimate secrets.

The summer before their senior year, Megan joins Lauren and her family on their private island off the coast of Maine. The weeks go by, filled with fun and relaxation, until late one night at the end of the vacation, something unspeakable happens, searing through the framework of the girls' friendship and tearing them apart. Many years later, in the midst of a political scandal, Megan finally comes forward about what happened that fateful night, revealing a horrible truth about Lauren's family and threatening to expose their long-buried secrets.

In this captivating and moving novel of domestic suspense, Paula Treick DeBoard explores the power of friendship and secrets and shows how betrayal can lead to disastrous, and deadly, consequences.

Easy read

This wasn't my favourite, but I did enjoy it. It was very predictable and you knew pretty well from the beginning what was going to happen, but a nice read.

Not even attempting it

Couldn't get through first chapter. May be great story, but I won't know. Narrator that sounds like she has pneumonia and talking about mesothelioma kept me from even attempting to try this book. #fail

awful narration

I am struggling to get through it because I cannot stand Megan's voice. I am enjoying the story, it's too bad about the horrible narration.

narrator was really bad!

The narrator voice for Meghan was awful. She talked with a strong vocal fry. I stopped listening 2 hours into the story because I couldn't handle the extremely bad vocal fry.

Can't get through it

The one narrator is so awful, sounds like she has COPD with acute bronchitis. All it is is scratchy voice. She needs to cough or something. So distracting I can't get through this book at all. Can't even pay attention to the story. No idea if the book is good. I returned it.

Horrible Narration

Who in the world thought it would be a good idea to have this voice narrating a book? She sounded like either a 2 pack a day smoker or someone on the verge of laryngitis. I could not stand the thought of hours and hours of it so I’m returning this book.

That voice!

You know how a narrator can make or break a book? Well the voice of “Meghan” was close to doing that for me! It was work to get passed her annoying tone to find out how the book ended. Will never put myself through that again!

Not worth it

This book was so long winded and boring. I really suggest you keep your credit.
