Publisher's summary

Scarred by poverty and life with a crackhead mother, Onika Lewis had a rough start. Still, thanks to her sharp mind, and hard work, she graduated with honors from a prestigious college. But her achievements weren't enough to earn her the elite status she craved. So she leveraged her gorgeous looks to become a rich man's trophy. And was eventually dumped for a younger model. Now Onika is unemployed, broke - and homeless. She's making a fresh start through a unique women's shelter, but when she meets Graham, a kind-hearted commuter with whom she has an instant connection, she can't bring herself to tell him her secret. Suddenly Onika has someone who cares about who she is beyond her looks. Graham's unselfish love gives her the kind of hope she's never had. But when Onika's wealthy ex wants her back, she plays one deception too many trying to have it all. Now present lies and past secrets are tearing her world apart. And Onika will need to educate herself once more - to learn what really matters, find faith, forgiveness - and build a life she truly deserves.

From an 8 to a 3

On a scale of 1 - 10, 10 being the highest, this audiobook started as an 8 and slowly gravitated its way down to a 3. The story started off strong and seamlessly built up to its climax. However, somewhere along the way the author dropped the ball and the story became boring, unnecessarily detailed, and predictable. On a positive note, the main character's strengths and weaknesses were glaring and consistent which made her relatable. I also liked the appearance of what I construed to be subtle signs of God's presence in the main character's life throughout the story. In addition, the author did a good job of illustrating how one bad or uninformed choice can change the course of one's life in unimaginable ways.

Oddly Appealing..

Her Secret Life kept my interest throughout and was oddly appealing. It's about a young girl who betters her life, getting away from a crackhead mother and an overbearing Grandmother. She goes to a fancy college and has many mentors who help her get through her college years. She meets a rich man, and the story goes from there..

The problems with this story are two fold:

The ending is appalling and downright stupid.
The characters are much too simple. The writing is just 'simple.'

Having said that, there is some allure to the book. It borders on being Christian fiction and something else.. It's like the author is dealing with her belief in God, or her belief in nothing. The reader wants to know what the main character will do next.

The narrator is fairly monotone. However, in some odd way the story somehow works..

I don't know how to explain it. I guess the listener will get whatever he/she wants from the story. I am glad I experienced it.

Ending LET DOWN!

It was a good book that really held my attention... and then the end was a complete let down. No real resolution and and left our book club saying "WTH JUST HAPPENED!?"

Great Book!!!

The book and the Narrator was great. The ending could have been a little longer telling more about the relationship.

Rich college kid.

This was the typical poor kid makes it to college and assumed new identity...is later discovered...and boom: consequences. Overall good. Ending felt rushed just as last book I read from this author but still overall good.
