Publisher's summary

From the celebrated imagination of Dean Koontz comes a powerful reworking of one of the classic stories of all time. If you think you know the legend, you know only half the truth. Here is the mystery, the myth, the terror, and the magic of...

Every city has its secrets. But none as terrible as this. He is Deucalion, a tattooed man of mysterious origin, a sleight-of-reality artist who has traveled the centuries with a secret worse than death. He arrives in New Orleans as a serial killer stalks the streets, a killer who carefully selects his victims for the humanity that is missing in himself. Deucalion's path will lead him to cool, tough police detective Carson O'Connor and her devoted partner, Michael Maddison, who are tracking the slayer but will soon discover signs of something far more terrifying: an entire race of killers who are much more - and less - than human and, deadliest of all, their deranged, near-immortal maker: Victor Helios - once known as Frankenstein.

Great series, one of my favorites

I just finished a few of the Jane Hawk books, and realized that I should have posted a review of this series, because it was great. Books 1-3 were the best, and while 4 & 5 were good, 1-3 were great, and you could stop at the end of book 3 and be content.

Story is ok, performance not so great

The book is performed with a Boris Karloff/Igor voice which is quite annoying and detracted from the overall experience.

Part One With No Closure

I enjoy Dean Koontz's works, and this one is no exception. Well written and nicely developed characters.

However, after investing 9 hours, the book just ended. Not at a natural break point, but right in the middle of a number of streams.

I hate it when an author does this. The next books are available, but I don't think I will bother going on.

Pity.

Dean Koontz at his best

Truly a rarity! One story you can get lost in and never want to stop driving..

Do wish the reader was a little bit better but overall the story itself makes up for the bland reading.

I never expected to love it.

I’m a very big fan of Koontz, but I’ve not read a Koontz book for years. This book was so incredible. I thought it would be a rewrite, maybe a reimagining, but it was more like a continuation, more like the truth behind the legend. I loved it and I’m going to continue the series. I would recommend this book to just about anyone who can stand some mild violence and some very minor Frank talk about sex. Pun ‘tended.

I love the spin!

I enjoyed the book from beginning to end. I cannot wait to start book two. The narrator was excellent as well.

his best work

I read the shortly after they 1st came out in paper. And since then I've listened to them no less than 5 times. This is by far in my opinion Dean's finest finest work. If you like humor absurdity twists and turns. Than this might tickle your fancy.. It's a little weird and absurd for some people but well that's my jam. It's certainly not one of his more formulated works . I hope you give it a try
