Two-time Christy Award winner Lynn Austin is hailed for her inspiring historical novels. As in Candle in the Darkness Austin transports us back to the turbulence of the Civil War.Julia, a wealthy Philadelphia socialite is forced to overcome great obstacles and look for deeper meaning in her life when her intended describes her as shallow. Despite social restrictions on single women, she pursues a vocation as a battlefield nurse. Julia finds a kindred spirit in Phoebe, a West Virginia farm girl who dresses in men's clothing in order to be a soldier. Strength of character, determination, and faith foster their transformation into womanhood.
Winner of Library Journal's Best Christian Fiction Award for 2003, this novel portrays wholesome values. Christina Moore gives a warm narration of this well-crafted story.
"Refreshing, atypical heroines in absorbing parallel plots." (Library Journal)

Another great story
Engaging, authentic, inspiring
Lynn Austen's books relating to the Civil War have a Gone With the Wind flavor with a heroine you can admire. Her rich detail comes from thorough research that gives this inspiring story and its characters their depth.
Christina Moore always brings the emotion and color that adds so much meaning to the story. Her ability to develop each character with a unique vocal style is the basis of that color.
Once I've been drawn into one of Austen's stories, I just want to stay in it to see how the characters will grow and develop their faith.
I think Austen always finds a perfect balance between a message of faith and an engaging example of historical fiction.
