Serious material, unengaging characters

I just didn't enjoy this story as much as the Lola Lagos and Pepa Villa stories. It was lacking in humor and the material was too serious for such a short story for my taste. There are too many lead characters and one doesn't learn enough about them to become engaged in the outcome. The narrator was very good.
