Publisher's summary

In Loretta Nyhan’s warm and witty Amazon Charts bestselling novel, a widow discovers an unexpected chance to start over - right in her own backyard.

Paige Moresco found her true love in eighth grade - and lost him two years ago. Since his death, she’s been sleepwalking through life, barely holding on for the sake of her teenage son. Her house is a wreck, the grass is overrun with weeds, and she’s at risk of losing her job. As Paige stares at her neglected lawn, she knows she’s hit rock bottom. So she does something entirely unexpected: she begins to dig.

As the hole gets bigger, Paige decides to turn her entire yard into a vegetable garden. The neighbors in her tidy gated community are more than a little alarmed. Paige knows nothing about gardening, and she’s boldly flouting neighborhood-association bylaws. But with the help of new friends, a charming local cop, and the transformative power of the soil, Paige starts to see potential in the chaos of her life. Something big is beginning to take root - both in her garden and in herself.

Great

I actually got this because I am a widow and wondered if it would ring true. It did, and I enjoyed the story line and the friendships and messages of the story.

I'm glad I finished this book.

I almost didn't finish this story. I'm more of a bury-er than a dig it up and deal with it kind of griefer kind of person in some aspects. This book showed me what lightening the baggage can do for your life. I ended up loving it. I could relate to her gardening as it kind of resembles mine.

good

Not something I usually read. It read like an Hallmark channel show. It spoke of business hardships, life, hardships and healing both. It also had romance in the story as well.

Enjoyed the story - BUT ...

I really enjoyed the story line. It would have made a pleasant read. BUT, although the narrator has a lovely "regular" voice, her character switches and accents were uneven and deplorable.

Disappointing

The basic storyline was sweet but too simple, predictable and mostly boring. The narration drove me so crazy I almost didn't finish the book. The accents were grating and obnoxious.

Very disappointing

I was driving and wanted a riveting booking to pass the many hours on the road! This was not it!! It was plodding, unrealistic, idealistic and overly romantic, even to someone who is very much a romantic. Characters are single dimension and shallow. I listened for about 12 hours because I had no other choice and no where to download another book. I won't finish

Narrator voices were annoying - story was ok

The voices of the different characters were really bad - especially the men and the cockney British accent! Otherwise a nice story - not terribly exciting

Unexpectedly enjoyable

Paige Moresco met her true love in eighth grade.

They married right out of college, and had a son, Trey.

When Trey was in his early teens, though, Jesse died in a car crash.

Two years have passed, and neither Paige nor Trey has recovered from the loss. Paige isn't really keeping up with house maintenance. Weeds are taking over their yard, and the neighbors in their gated community aren't happy. Jesse and Paige, because of their childhoods in a dangerous neighborhood, were self-protective and contained, and now Paige doesn't really have friends outside of work. Trey has at least one friend at school, but his trauma over the way he lost his father is keeping from taking the driver's ed class that's mandatory for him to graduate high school.

Something has got to give--especially after Paige's boss dies, and his son takes over the company, with a very different approach both to management, and to business development for their small advertising agency. Paige is at risk of losing her job.

When the frustrations and pressures build too high, one night after work, while Trey is staying the night with his friend Colin, Paige drinks wine and digs in the back yard. First all the dandelions.

Then a great big hole.

She's getting her neighbors more nervous than ever, especially after she decides that she's going to turn the whole yard into a vegetable garden.

It's crazy, and it's distracting her from very real challenges at work, and her neighbors start filing complaints.

At first this had me pretty worried, in that it looked like the story would head in the direction of humiliating Paige for laughs, a "humor" I've never enjoyed. Instead, Paige starts to learn things about herself, her neighbors, her coworkers, and even the legitimately hard to like but not stupid new boss. It becomes a really interesting look at how grief and change, while painful, can also lead to growth and discovery.

In the end, enjoyable and interesting, with unexpectedly good character development.

I bought this audiobook.

Didn't hold my interest

Very put-downable. Not horrible, but I never felt compelled to go back to it. More than half way through and I'm ready to move on to something else.

I am obsessed.

So I stumbled upon this book in first reads and decided eh...why not. Boy was I surprised. I listen to audio books in my car to and from work, and with this book I literally LOL'd CONSTANTLY. People on the road must have thought I was out of my mind.

The story was brilliantly written. The characters were so relatable. The narration was PERFECT and brought everything to life. When it was over I was actually sad...and immediately started looking for more books by the author, and for more books with this same narrator.

READ THIS BOOK. Well...LISTEN to this book. I don't think it's possible to be disappointed, even if this type of read isn't normally your thing.
