Publisher's summary

Hurt people hurt people.

Say there was a novel in which Holden Caulfield was an alcoholic and Lolita was a photographer's assistant, and somehow they met in Bright Lights, Big City. He's blinded by love. She by ambition.

Diary of an Oxygen Thief is an honest, hilarious, and heartrending novel but, above all, a very realistic account of what we do to each other and what we allow to have done to us.

an emotional rollercoaster

the beginning I hated him, the middle I felt he had a turning point, the end I wanted to cry for him. A story about the way we treat each other, brilliantly told in a way that makes you reevaluate your own relationships.

the reading was phenomenal.

Not Sure About This One

I have no idea how to even review this book. First off, if you are offended by sex and profanity, this is not for you. There were parts of this book where I was completely turned off by his misogynist attitude and I kept thinking "what a creep." I also kept thinking that this reminded me of some of the guys I dated in my 20s. But there were other parts that interested me, such as his experience working in the ad agency, his move to Minnesota, and the woman who treated him like he had been treated. And while I cringed at some parts, I also chuckled at some (the mosquito being the state bird of Minnesota and his description of his masturbation techniques come to mind). So, overall, I had to give this a neutral 3 star rating.

It was fine???

It was good enough to listen on double time and get it over with. If I would of fallen asleep I would not of missed a thing. My wife fell asleep and I told her to keep going. This book was not fun because but not bad. I could look up things online and give it some attention. It made my flight better. If you don't need to use a book on a 2 hour flight skip this one. I will not read the others. In the end I am fine I got this. Ummmmm what??? Sure that was confusing but it fits.

UGH. Yawn.

If you ever want to get inside the deranged mind of an emotionally homicidal sociopath who somehow, deep down, desires sympathy then go ahead.
If I knew who would be writing the other side of the story, I would love to get my hands on her book.
Actually, note to the author: You must really be a true narcissist to think that someone would go out of their way to bother to write a book about you.
My skin is crawling .

Boring

I listened to the book but did not find it all that interesting or thought provoking. It was just boring.

INTRIGUING

The book would've gotten a 5 star rating if i didn't get lost at times on what the author was depicting imagery wise

Can’t look away , in a car crash kind of way.

Cringe worthy at the beginning.
A misogynist tells a story of a sociopath and his masochistic relationships. I could not put it down as you wait for the comeuppance of this scoundrel.

Uninteresting, the narrator is more annoying than anything.

The book follows the general format of (1) get the listener to hate the narrator in the beginning, (2) warm up to him in the middle, and (3) like him enough to feel really sorry for him at the end. Except I never found the narrator likable. In the middle he was slightly less repulsive than in the beginning, but at no point was he likable. Therefore in the end I felt at most mildly sorry for him, even though the intention is clearly for us to feel awful for him.

None of this is helped by how generally uninteresting the story is. If 50% of the book's content were omitted, it would still feel about the same. The writer also makes some annoying choices when the narrator speaks to the listener directly. At one point he says something to the effect of -Was I rambling? You mustn't let me do that.- WTH? Me stop you? Unnecessary annoyances like this certainly don't help a book that is already uninteresting.

I think of karma

I loved the story! It was bouncing around a lot which made my mind wander but for the author: karma says that "you will fall in love with someone who doesn't love you for not loving someone who did"

I thought it was good

I don’t understand why people have so many problems with it because it’s his life he did take accountability for the crap he did and to others
