Where does Desert Gold rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I have listened to a lot of audio books and this rendition ranks right up there with the best of them. I have found a new favorite narrator. I love Al Kassel's voice. His performance was flawless. I often have a problem with men doing women voices. They make the women voices harsh and very grating on the ears. All of the voices done by Al were pleasant and natural sounding. This novel is one of those that touches you deep in the soul and leaves something with you. Whether it be the horses, the magnificent scenery of the dessert or the very strong characters portrayed, you just can't let it go. I can't think of a book where just the prologue tells so much even before the book was started. I really enjoyed this book. You will never forget Lad, Dick, Gail and the beloved Yakki Indian to name a few. I thought for days of their flight over hot dessert lava. Their trek through the painful choya cactus. It was a very touching jorney.

What did you like best about this story?

I love the white horses. My favorite was Blanco Sol, Gail's horse. I could not get over how well Zane Grey describes the characters man and beast. I also love the Yaki Indian. He was intriguing.

Which character – as performed by Al Kessel – was your favorite?

Al gave a brilliant voice to many of the characters. I could just spend time imagining what is going on and really getting into the story. There were sections that described the horrible choya cactus. I googled these on my tablet while listening. I also research the Yakki Indians and saw that the descriptions in the book was a true portrayal of history. They were enslaved by the Mexicans.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I don't know. I hate to put something cliched on such a brilliant work. I would rather not.

Worst narration EVER! Too bad - great story

I made it through because of the story ... in spite of the robotic narrator- I wondered early if it was computer generated reader. The story is wonderful.

Worst. Narrator. Ever.

Read the book. Don't listen to this narrator, he totally spoils it with awkward intonation. It's like he was reading the words but had no idea what they meant.
